Charlie Chaplin was born in London, England, on April 16, 1889. His father left the
family when Charlie was very small. His mother was an attractive actress and singer
who gained a reputation for her work in the opera field. Chaplin's mother was able to
support her family for a few years. But once she lost her voice and later she ran out of
money.

When he was about 12, he got his first chance to act in a stage show, and appeared as
«Billy» in «Sherlock Holmes». Charlie started a career as a comedian which took him to
the United States in 1910 as a player with the Fred Karno Repertoire Company. When
they returned to the United States in 1912, Chaplin was offered a motion picture
contract. In 1913 he joined Mack Sennett and the Keystone Film Company. His salary
was $150 a week, but his success on the screen made other producers start working with
him. After the Keystone Film Company Chaplin moved on to the Essanay Company in
1915. The following year Charlie was even more in demand and signed with the
Mutual Film Corporation to make 12 tworeel comedies.

By the age of 26 Chaplin was a superstar. The Mutual Company paid him $670,000 a
year. The money made Chaplin a wealthy man. When his contract with Mutual expired
in 1917, Chaplin decided to become an independent producer and make his movies. He
was busy with the construction of his own studios. This plant was situated in
Hollywood. His first film was «A Dog’s Life». In April Chaplin joined with Mary
Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith to found the United Artists Corporation
which introduced new relations between producers and actors.

In Hollywood he started his active association with United Artists. Under his
arrangement with U.A., Chaplin made his own eight pictures. The Kid (1921) in which
he introduced to the screen one of the greatest child actors the world has ever known —
Jackie Coogan.
A Woman of Paris (1923) was a romantic drama. Until this time, every film had been a
comedy. The Circus (1928) – which brought Charles Chaplin his first Academy Award (it
was still not yet called the ‘Oscar’). When writing The Great Dictator in1939, Chaplin was
as famous as Hitler, and his character wore the same moustache. With the film A King in
New York Charles Chaplin was the first filmmaker to show, through satire, the paranoia
and political intolerance in the United States in the Cold War years of the 1940s and 50s.
In 1966 he produced his last picture “A Countess from Hong Kong” for Universal
Pictures. It was his only film in colour, starring Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando. The film was unsuccessful at the box office but songs from the soundtrack music are very
popular.

At the end of his life, Chaplin made one last visit to the United States in 1972 when he
was given an Academy Award. Charles had had health problems for many years. He was
confined to a wheelchair and his speech, hearing and sight were impaired. In December
25, 1977, Charlie Chaplin died at his home in Switzerland. He was 88 years old. His
wife, Oona, and seven of his children were at his bedside. Chaplin's body was stolen not
long after he was buried from his grave in Switzerland by two men who demanded
$400,000 for its return. The men were arrested and Chaplin's body was recovered 11
weeks later.

Chaplin was fond of writing, music and sports. He was the author of at least four books.
Being a selftaught musician he played the violin and cello lefthanded with equal skill.
He was also a composer, having written and published many songs, as well as the
soundtracks for all his films. Charles Chaplin was one of the comedians who financed
and produced all his films, he was the author, actor and director. He is the greatest comic
