Boxing Day has nothing to do with boxing. Nor is it a day for people to give back boxes with Christmas presents. Boxing Day began in England during Victorian times. Some historians say the holiday started because servants worked on Christmas Day, but  didn’t work the next day. As servants went home to visit their families, their masters  presented them with gift boxes. Another theory is that the boxes placed in churches, where people put money for the  poor, were opened on December 26. Today there is a tradition to give presents or tips (extra money) to shop assistants,  postmen, doormen, porters, and others who helped people and worked at Christmas. The British spend Boxing Day with their families and friends, usually those not seen on  Christmas Day. The day has recently become synonymous with sports. Horse racing is very  popular on this day. Many top football teams also play on Boxing day.  Boxing Day is also a time when the British take part in all kinds of silly activities. For  example, fun runs or swimming the English Channel – not the warmest place on the 26th of  December. Boxing Day is one of the British bank holidays (официальный нерабочий день) when  all the banks, offices, and the post office are closed. The others include Christmas, Good  Friday (Страстная Пятница), Easter, Whitmonday (день после Троицы), and the banking  holiday on the last Monday in August.
