Data security, privacy and integrity

10.1.3.1 describe the concepts of 'information security', 'privacy' and data 'sustainability'

Success criteria

All learners will be able to:
Explain what the terms information security, privacy and data sustainability
Know the differences between the terms information security, privacy and integrity

Data security

Data users must ensure they take adequate measures to prevent unauthorised access to the data they hold such as:
hacking of database servers
physical theft of database servers
interception during physical or electronic transfer

Data privacy

Data Privacy is the branch of information security dealing with the proper handling of data concerning consent, notice, sensitivity, and regulatory concerns. Practical data privacy problems often revolve around:
Whether or how data can be shared with third parties.
If data can legally be collected or stored.
Regulatory restrictions such as GDPR, HIPAA or COPPA.

Data integrity

Data integrity is the maintenance of, and the assurance of the accuracy and consistency of, data over its entire life-cycle, and is a critical aspect to the design, implementation and usage of any system which stores, processes, or retrieves data. The term is broad in scope and may have widely different meanings depending on the specific context – even under the same general umbrella of computing. It is at times used as a proxy term for data quality, while data validation is a pre-requisite for data integrity. Data integrity is the opposite of data corruption.

Group work

Discuss your definition and make an assumption which of today’s new terms best fit your definition

Reflection

What has been learned?
What remained unclear?
What needs more attention?
Reflection Thermometer:
36,6 interesting, useful
38 is not interesting, hard
34 useless, priceless
