A person can choose sports and games for any season,

THE HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES
Since ancient time people like to compete. The world’s greatest international games are known as the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games have a very long history. They began in 777 BC in Greece and took place every four years for nearly twelve centuries. They were for men only. These games were part of a festival held every fourth year in honor of God Zeus at the place called Olympia. The athletes competed in running, boxing, wrestling and horse racing. The best athletes from different cities of Greece came to take part in the competition. The games were so popular that people used to stop wars during the games.

THE MODERN OLYMPIC GAMES

Pierre de Coubertin

In the 4-th century the tradition of Olympic games stopped. The modern Olympic Games began again in 1896. They were revived by a Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin. In 1896 the International Olympic Committee was set up. Since then the Olympics were held regularly. Women began to take part in Games in 1912. There were no Olympic Games only during the two world wars (in 1916, 1940 and 1944). The ancient Greeks had no winter sports. Only in 1924 the first Winter Olympic Games were held in France. Now Summer and Winter Games are held separately. Russia joined the Olympic movement in 1952. In 1980, Moscow hosted the twenty-second Olympic Games.

The Olympic motto is "Faster, Higher, Stronger."

The Olympic emblem is five interlinked rings: blue, yellow, black, green and red. The Olympic rings were created in 1913 and represent the five continents.

THE OLYMPIC SYMBOLS

The Olympic flame is one of the symbols of the Olympic Games. It is a symbol of spirit, knowledge and life. The fire comes from Olympia, a small town in Greece and many runners transport the flame in a torch to the country of the games. It burns from the opening ceremony until the end of the games.

The Opening Ceremony

The Olympic Games begin with the opening ceremony. Athletes light the Olympic flame. It is a symbol of spirit, knowledge and life. Each athlete had to take the Olympic Oath - a promise to behave and compete in a fair way. The Olympic anthem is sung. It was composed by Spyridon Samaras (music) and Costis Palamas (lyrics).

SPORTS

Nowadays, many cities compete to host the Olympic Games. It is a great honour to host the Games. The games have also become politically important. The International Olympic Committee is the organization that governs the games. It decides which sports and events are held at the games and the host city for the summer and winter games. The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will take place in the Russian Federation. The next summer games will be held in Rio.

MY FAVORITE SPORT

As for me I am not going in for sport. In my free time I sometimes go swimming. I also have lessons of PT at school. I prefer watching sport programs on TV. My favorite sports are football and hockey. My uncle and I are waiting for ice hockey matches. We believe that our team will win and become the Olympic Champion.
In my class only one pupil does sport professionally every day. All other pupils like watching TV programs.
