What is war?
It’s death, pain, losses and tears. Broken lives, which will never see the sun, will never hug the children, will never feel the mother’s care, will never support their wives and husbands. This is the end, for them, for those who died.
On the 22nd of June 1941 at 4 a.m. fascist Germany attacked our country and the Great Patriotic War began.
All people, young and old, stood proudly and fought together for motherland and her sons.
Vasily Lebedev-Kumach wrote a poem, which became a song:
Rise up, beloved Soviet land, To meet the fascist foe To stay his strong and evil hand Go forth, to battle go.
The beginning…
The first war days…
The blockade of Leningrad lasted 872 days:
from 8 September, 1941 to 27 January, 1944
After some weeks of the beginning the Great Patriotic war the German armies occupied Leningrad.
It was in September 1941. There was a blockade around the city. 872 awful hungry days. People died from starvation and bitter cold.
The city was bombed every day. Hitler was sure it was impossible to live through such situation. He wanted Leningrad to wipe off the face of the Earth. But he was mistaken.
125 grams of bread per person a day. 300 grams of groats and 100 grams of butter a month. And later only 125 grams of bread and nothing else.
The Cranes
Sometimes I feel that our fallen soldiers, Who left on battlefields their bloody stains, Did not lay down in their graves for solace, But have become the white-winged cranes.

The Great Victory is connected with the Great October.
On 7 November, the Red Army soldiers marched directly to the front to defend the Soviet capital. And it is a convincing symbol of victory over fascism.

Some facts about war…
The war lasted 1,418 days
During the first month of the war, the Kremlin "disappeared" from Moscow.
80,000 female officers took part in the war.
During the war, more than 60 thousand dogs served on various fronts.
More than 11.5 thousand people received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
In the USSR, 27 million people died – 40% of all victims.
The children also fought for their homeland
Tens of thousands of children were awarded orders and medals for their military services, five of them received
the Hero of the Soviet Union award:
14-year-olds Lenya Golikov and Sasha Chekalin,
as well as 15-year-olds Marat Kazey, Valya Kotik and Zina Portnova.
For heroic deeds in the Great Patriotic War, more than 11 thousand people
were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (some posthumously),
of which 104 were awarded twice, three three times.
