Trade relations between Russia and Latin America are strengthening every year. The countries of the region are becoming important partners for Russia due to the availability of natural resources, agricultural products and industrial potential.
Latin America and Russia
Changes in Russian exports and import
In 2024, Russian entrepreneurs sold 109 million tons of agricultural products worth $42.6 billion. This brought Russia to the third place in the world ranking in terms of physical volumes of food sales. Over the past 10 years, agricultural production in the country has increased by 33%, and food production by 43%. This made it possible to export 2.5 times more products. Machinery, equipment and chemical products account for 7.4% of total exports.
Obstacles of 2025 for Russian trade
Currently, it is not uncommon for goods from the EU to be imported to Russia through countries such as Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Turkey. Currently, it is extremely difficult to determine the real source of import flows of products, since goods are often mixed with flows in transit from countries that have imposed sanctions against Russia, but in fact continue to serve the Russian market.
Brazil is the main partner in Latin America
In January-August 2024, the trade turnover between the EAEU and MERCOSUR increased by a record 16.7% compared to the same period in 2023, with Brazil accounting for almost 90% of the total EAEU–MERCOSUR trade turnover. EAEU exports to Brazil increased by 32.1% during the specified period, while the share of the Russian Federation in EAEU exports to this country exceeded 85%..
conclusion
Despite all the successes and achievements, the existing significant potential has not been fully realized and with sufficient productivity, there are not enough joint megaprojects, business ties are insufficiently developed, etc. At the same time, Brazil and Peru are gradually taking their rightful place among promising long-term partners of Russia/ the EAEU, including the formation of free trade zones, which meets the interests of all interested parties.
