Devil's Tower is national Monument of nature in the valley of the Bell Fourche River in Wyoming, USA.
It is a monolith of volcanic origin with a height of 1,558 m above sea level (386 m above the river valley) and a relative height of 265 m.
. It is the first object to be recognized as a "national monument" of the United States, having received its status from President Theodore Roosevelt on September 24, 1906

"House of the Bear".

Mountain has a name – Devil's Tower. It seems to remind everyone of the divine origin of this unique formation. However, the local Indians, who have long lived in these places, call the mountain in a completely different way, namely Mata Tipila, which means "House of the Bear".
The legend of the name is beautiful and mysterious. One day, seven girls were walking in the forest and they were noticed by angry bears. Running away, the children climbed a low hill and began to pray to the gods that he would grow up a little. And so it happened – the mountain began to grow, and the bears, trying to reach the girls, began to scratch its slopes, leaving deep vertical furrows on them. In the end, the animals retreated, and the girls never returned home, turning into bright stars that shine at us from the constellation of the Pleiades.

Famous professional parachutist George Hopkins in 1941 decided to literally jump off an airplane and land on top of a mountain. He managed to do it. But he did not think about how he would descend, he was a good parachutist, but a bad climber.

Parachuting from the top would have led to death, and descending with a rope without preparation promised the same outcome.
The traveler could have been picked up using aircraft, but there was no place for an airplane on top, and strong winds prevented the use of helicopters (they were quite low-powered at that time).

Rescuers dropped ropes and rope ladders to him, but they broke on the rocks. Three days have passed, and there were no ways to get him off the cliff. While the rescuers were coming up with options, individual private companies organized the supply of Hopkins with clothes and food for the purpose of advertising.
Salvation came only 7 days later, when Hopkins despaired of getting help. It was filmed by the first conqueror of the Tower, Jack Durance, who was found by rescuers. The climber and his team climbed the Tower again along a route known only to him, and took the exhausted Hopkins, who was already close to nervous and physical exhaustion
