The Second Wonder of the World is considered to be the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which, according to one of the many versions, were built around 600 BC by order of the New Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife, the Midian princess Amitis. Subsequently, the daughter of King Chiaksar began to be named after the Assyrian Queen Shamiram-Semiramis.
History
The hanging gardens of Babylon were a four-story building, in shape resembling a pyramid, the tiers of which, held by powerful columns, were both balconies and terraces. Hanging unique plants, combined with fountains and ponds, turned the Babylonian building into a real oasis.
description
To supply the gardens with water, a special irrigation system was designed: hundreds of slaves turned wheels with buckets day and night. When Babylon fell into decay, there was no one to do irrigation; the unique flora of the hanging gardens perished. Finished the job - finally destroyed the palace - frequent earthquakes. Babylon disappeared from the face of the earth, and with it the Hanging Gardens of Babylon disappeared into oblivion, one of the most beautiful monuments of antiquity.
why did it disappear?
