Articles are much bigger and they are thicker than popular ones.

Have a lot of pictures and interesting headlines.
Their articles are usually short.

The quality newspapers

They include factual reports of major national and international events in the world of politics and business, art and sport.

The Times is a daily national newspaper published in the United Kingdom since 1785, when it was known as The Daily Universal Register.
The newspaper was printed in broadsheet format for 219 years but switched to compact size in 2004 partly in an attempt to appeal to younger readers and partly to appeal to commuters using public transport.

The Times

The Independent is a British newspaper published by Tony O’Reily’s Independent News & Media.
It is nicknamed the Indy, while the Sunday edition is the Sindy.
Launched in 1986, it is one of the youngest UK national daily newspapers.
It is regarded as leaning to the left politically, although it has not affiliated itself to any political party.
The Independent has a reputation for its emphasis on views, rather than on news.

The popular newspapers or «tabloids»

Type of newspaper that has smaller pages, many pictures, and short reports. They like shocking, personal stories. They concentrate on more emotive reporting of stories, featuring violence, the life of the Royal Family, film and pop stars and sport. They aim to entertain readers rather than inform them. The tabloid press is much more popular than the quality press.

The Sun is a daily tabloid published in the UK and Ireland.
It has the highest circulation of any daily newspaper in the world.
The Sun relies heavily on stories and scandals involving celebrities and the entertainment industry. It contains sections such as Bizarre (pop music stories and gossip) and TV Biz (television stories, concentrating on soap operas and reality TV).

The Daily Express is a conservative British tabloid newspaper. The Daily Express select front-page stories that follow recurring themes, and often ignore the major news of the day in favour of spurious stories.
During 2009 and 2010, health stories were very popular. For example, they featured the discovery of rather unusual potential cures for diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or cancer. The usual headlines: “Sunshine vitamins cut risk of cancer”.
The Daily Express also features global warming stories.

Magazines

A lot of different magazines are also published in Great Britain. Some of them are dedicated to certain topics. For example, the Take a Break - women's publication, the Athenaeum - literary publication, Clash -
music publication.

Television

In London people have four main TV channels: BBC I, BBC II, ITV (Independent Television) and Channel IV. There are different types of TV programmes in Great Britain: news programmes, chat shows, quiz shows, soap operas, different children’s programmes, dramas, comedies and different programmes of entertainment.

BBC 1

BBC 1 broadcasts a schedule of news, information programmes, documentaries, plays, films and light entertainment (such as comedies and quiz shows) from early morning to late at night.

ITV

ITV started in 1954. Commercial television gets its money from advertising. The programmes on this channel are financed by different companies, which do not have anything to do with the content of these programmes. ITV news programmes are not made by individual television companies. Independent Television News is owned jointly by all of them. So it has been protected from commercial influence.

BBC and ITV start early in the morning. One can watch news programmes, all kinds of chat shows, quiz shows, soap operas, different children’s programmes, dramas, comedies and different programmes of entertainment on these channels. ITV's schedule is similar, but its presentation is generally slicker and more 'glossy'. Its programmes are cast round the clock.

Radio

There are three radio and TV stations. The first one is BBC - British Broadcasting Corporation. BBC has 14 radio stations and 2 TV channels. The second one is IBA - Independent Broadcasting Authorities. The third one is the Radio Authority.

There were 63 million internet users in the UK by late 2017, nearly 95% of the population. At the start of 2018, 44 million British people were active on social media - around 66% of the population. The BBC is Britain's most popular online news destination.
