Modern music: Claude Debussy &  Maurice Ravel

French composer, founder of musical impressionism, music critic Achille-Claude Debussy was born on August 22, 1862 on the outskirts of Paris Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Debussy began studying music at the age of 9 and already in 1872 entered the junior department of the Paris Conservatory.

After graduating from the conservatory in 1884, Debussy participates in competitions for the Grand Rome Prize, which gives the right to a four-year improvement in Rome, at the Villa Medici. During the years spent in Italy, Debussy studied the choral music of the Renaissance, and the distant past brought a fresh stream, renewed his harmonious thinking.
Returning ahead of schedule to Paris, Debussy approached the circle of Symbolist poets headed by S. Mallarmé. The musicality of Symbolist poetry, the search for mysterious connections between the life of the soul and the natural world, their mutual dissolution – all this attracted Debussy very much and largely shaped his aesthetics.

French composer Maurice Ravel was born on March 7, 1875 in the city of Sibourg in the south of France.

Maurice began studying music at the age of six to seven. At first, he took lessons from the composer and pianist Henri Guis, from 1887 the boy’s musical education was continued by Charles Rene. Studying with René, Ravel composed a variation on a Schumann theme and the first movement of a piano sonata.

In 1889-1895 and 1897-1905, Maurice Ravel studied at the Paris Conservatory, where his composition teacher was Gabriel Fauré, one of the leading French composers of the time.
For the sake of graduating from the conservatory with a prize and receiving a scholarship for a four-year stay in Italy, Ravel participated in competitions 5 times, but was never awarded the first prize.

The element of dance has always attracted Ravel. Monumental historical canvas of his charming and tragic «Waltz», fragile and refined «Noble and sentimental waltzes», clear rhythm of the famous «Bolero», Malaguena and Habanera from «Spanish Rhapsody», Pavane, Minuet, Forlana and Rigaudon from «Tomb of Couperin» modern and ancient dances of various peoples are refracted in the composer’s musical consciousness into lyrical miniatures of rare beauty.
