Имена прилагательные в английском языке имеют три степени сравнения:
Положительную big, nice, small, strong, sad
Сравнительную bigger, nicer, smaller, stronger, sadder
Превосходную the biggest, the nicest, the smallest,
the strongest, the saddest

В написании удваивается конечная согласная буква, если односложное прилагательное оканчивается на одну согласную с предшествующим кратким гласным звуком:
hot- hotter- the hottest  
big - bigger – the biggest
fat – fatter- the fattest

happy – happier – the happiest
hungry – hungrier – the hungriest
dirty – dirtier – the dirtiest

Конечная гласная е опускается перед фиксами -еr, -est:

large - larger – the largest
white - whiter – the whitest
nice – nicer -the nicest
wide – wider – the widest
late – later – the latest
