On the 25th of January,
1759, a son was born
to William Burness.
He was called Robert.

Robert’s parents
His father William was a gardener on a small
estate (поместье).
Robert’s mother
knew many old songs
and ballads.
In the evenings she
told the children
folktales.
4
The family was
very poor, but
the father
wanted to give
the children the
best education.
When the
children were
young, he began
to teach them to
read and write.
5
When Robert was six, he and his
brother Gilbert went to school. But
a few months later the school was
closed. But father and some
people engaged another teacher.
The teacher lived with each family
in turn and taught the children
Robert interested him
more than his other pupils.
7
Robert’s mother, Agnes,
would delight him by
singing traditional Scots
songs and a distant
cousin, Betty Davidson,
told him the tales about
ghosts and witches.

The poet was deeply
interested in the
glorious past of his
country, which he
called “the birthplace
of valour (доблесть),
the country of worth
(достоинства)”. In
many of his poems
Robert Burns sings
the beauty of his
native land.
