Today is Maria’s birthday. She is getting ready to go to school. She has a big breakfast with her family and then she walks out the door. “No one remembered my birthday! I can’t believe they forgot!” she says. She is very sad.

At school nobody remembers her birthday. Her friends ask her to play, but she stays in the classroom. She wants to be alone. “Last year they remembered my birthday, but not this year!” she says. Then she starts to cry.

Her teacher walks into the classroom.”What’s wrong, Maria? Why aren’t you playing outside with your friends?” she asks.”I don’t want to go outside,” Maria says. Maria tells her that she’s sad because everyone forgot her birthday. Her teacher kisses her and tells her that she shouldn’t be sad because her friends and family love her.

After school Maria takes the bus back home. She opens the front door, but the room is very dark, so she turns on the lights. Suddenly, she hears, “Surprise!Happy birthday!” from all her friends and family in the room. Maria is so happy! “I thought you forgot!” she says. “This is the best birthday! Thank you!”

It’s almost Christmas. Tom and his brother Bob are writing their letters to Santa Claus. Both boys want the same thing – a bike. “We can ride the bike together!”

At night in their bedroom Tom says, “I’m older than you. I’ll always ride the bike down the street, and you can ride it up.” “No, you won’t,” says Bob. “It’s my bike, too! I’ll ride it down the street!” Tom and Bob start to fight about the new bike. At the end they go to their mother.

Their mother is very sad. Her little boys never were so unkind to each other. She kisses their faces and tells them how their naughty words hurt her.

Christmas morning comes. The boys get out of bed and go to get their presents from the stockings. Each little red stocking is full of toys and sweets. They are so happy! But where’s their new bike? Suddenly, Tom says,”Bob, here’s a letter!” They take the letter out and they read it, “My dear boys, no bike this year. You were not good to each other, so I was afraid to bring it. Get ready for it next year. Merry Christmas! Santa Claus.”
