St. Patricks Day.
St. Patrick’s ay is Ireland’s greatest national holiday as well as a holy
day. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He was born in the later
half of the 4th century AD. There different views about the exact year
and place of his birth. According to one opinion, he was born about
393AD. His birth place is said to be the either Scotland, Wales or
Roman England. His real name was probably Maewyn Succat. At the
age of 16, the boy was sold to Slavery by a group of Irish raiders. He
escaped from Slavery after six years and went to Gaul where he studied
in Monastery within twelve years. During his training he believed that
his calling was to convert the Irishmen to Christianity, so he managed
to get a post of bishop of Ireland. St. Patrick’s was quite successful at
converting the Irish people to Christianity. He traveled throughout
Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up
schools to teach Latin to the Irishmen. This fact upset the Celtic
Druids. They kept their knowledge in a secret among themselves, which
meant that no one but the Druids could read. St. Patrick was arrested
several times, but escaped each time.
The Irishmen believe that he worked lots of miracles. Once he got rid
of all the snakes in Ireland, and this is why there are no snakes to be
taken away one by one, and they all rushed out from the sea. But there
was one very big old snake that left behind. St. Patrick made a wooden
box, it is said “It’s too small for me”. “ No”, said St. Patrick. “It’s perfect
for you. Try it and see”. It crawled into the box and curled into a ball.
Immediately St. Patrick closed the box and threw it to the sea. Now, not
a single snake can found in Ireland.
St. Patrick wrote a book of his adventures. There still ancient copies of
his works in a few libraries., but the original, in his own handwriting ,
disappeared more than thousand years ago. St, Patrick died on March
17 in A/D. 461, but it is unknown where he was buried. He is simply a
part of the Irish soil. Irish symbols
Shamrock
St. Patrick is said to have taken the threeleaved shamrocks as a
symbol of the Holy Trinity of the Christian religion – the father, the
son,, and the holy Ghost. Shamrock is the national emblem of Ireland
and is worn proudly by Irish people all over the world on St. Patrick’s
Day. As a symbol of Ireland it has long been integrated into the symbol
of the United Kingdom, along with the Rose, the Thistle and the Leek of
England, Scotland and Wales. On St. Patrick’s Day, a member of the
British Royal Family presents Shamrock to the Irish Guards regiment
of the British Army.
Leprechoun
The name leprechaun is derived from the old Irish word luchorpan
which means “ little boy’. The leprechaun is an Irish fairy. He looks
like a small, old man (about 2 feet tall), often dressed like a shoemaker,
with a cocked hat and leather apron. According to a legend,
leprechouns are aloof and unfriendly, live alone, and pass the time
making shoes. They also possess a hidden pot of gold. Treasure hunters
can often track down a leprechaun by the sound of his shoemaker’s
hammer. The legend is that if you are catch one you can force him to
tell you where he hides his gold. But you must keep your eyes on him
every second. If your eyes leave the leprechaun, he vanishes and all
hopes of finding the treasure are lost. St. Patrick’s Day Traditions
Contrary to popular belief, this tradition
did not originate in Ireland.
The first St. Patrick’s Day celebration was
hosted by the Charitable Irish Society of Boston,
North America, in 1737. Today festive parades
are held by Irish people all over the world.
On this holiday people wear green clothes
with shamrock emblems, eat Irish food
such as an Irish Stew and Corned Beef
with cabbage. Actually Corned Beef is not
an Irish dish. It is what Americans think
the Irish eat. A more traditional meal
would be ham and cabbage or bacon
and cabbage. Every year thousands of pilgrims,
many in bare feet, climb the 2,500 ft to the peak
of Croagh Patrick, to pay homage
to St’ Patrick’s Christian mission in Ireland.
Legend says that it was here the saint
rang his bell and the snakes of Ireland fled.
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.
When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure it’s like a morning spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away. My Wild Irish Rose
My wild Irish rose,
The sweetest flowers that grows.
You may search everywhere,
But none can compare with my wild Irish Rose.
My Wild Irish Rose,
The dearest flower that grows.
And someday for my sake,
She may let me take,
The bloom from my wild Irish Rose.
March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a national Irish holiday. But many people
who immigrated to the United States have come from Ireland. Today, it is said,
Irish descendants in the United States put on a noisier and bigger St. Patrick’s Day
celebration than people in Ireland. Every year on march 17 or the preceding
Saturday, cities with large population of Irish Americans have parades. Green is
one of the national colours of Ireland and also one of the signs of spring. Green
stripes are painted on the streets where the parade will travel. People wear green
shirts, ties, hair ribbons and hats. Many Americans bars even serve green beer on
that day!
St. Patrick’s Day is fun to celebrate by doing things like decorating shamrock
necklaces or pins. If you are planning a St. Patrick’s Day party you can use your
homemade shamrock jewelry for playing a party game. Have each person wear their
bodies, hands, legs, or feet. They then must keep an eye on all the other party
guests and if they catch anyone crossing anything, they may go to that person and
request their shamrock jewelry and wear it in addition to their own. The person
wearing the most by the end of the party is the winner of this game. Another fun
game is to hide a small pot of gold chocolate coins and let your guests search for it.
If you are planning to serve food at your party, you could draw a four leaf clover on
the bottom of one of your plates and have a door prize for the guest who selects that
plate. For some fun you can place your invitation message on shamrocks cut from
green construction paper, or you could use the oneserving size boxes of cereal and
place your invitation message on the back with a large mailing label: then guest
who selects that plate.
A St. Patrick Day Party Buffet is fun and easy because just about any kind of
food can be tinted green. A more traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage is
another option and you can add lots of green side dishes to go along with it. A
Blarney Stone surrounded by shamrocks, a leprechaun sitting next to a pot of gold
chocolate coins, or even an Irish Derby make great centerpieces for a St. Patrick’s
Day Buffet table. Clear carbonated beverages can be tinted green to fill a punch
bowl, and mint chocolate chip ice cream makes a great St’ Patrick’s Day dessert. An Original Poem by Sheri Amon
Oh, the leprechehoun, a mysterious fellow,
An Irish fairy he be.
An unfriendly sort who keeps to himself,
A miserly fellow is he.
Making shoes for his living, not a bit
Does he spend,
Instead stores it all in a pot.
At the end of the rainbow his hiding place is,
And to find will bring you good luck.
If you happen to hear a shoemaker’s hummer,
It is the sound that a leprechaun makes.
Find him and corner him, he’ll tell you his secret,
If a stare you can maintain.
Look not for this fairy is tricky,
He’ll attempt to sway your glance.
Gone he will be, look away for a moment,
And you’ll lose away for a moment,
And you’ll loose your only chance.
