I never drink coffee. After breakfast I dress, take my bag and go to the university. Sometimes I get to the university by bus, and sometimes – by tram. Our lessons usually start at half past 8 a.m. and finish at 5 p.m. We have 4 or 5lessons every day. At the lessons we usually write lectures, listen to the teacher, read different texts, then discuss them, translate sentences. I like to study at the university more than at school. After the lessons I usually go to the library with my group mates, where we usually do our homework. I come home at about 6 p.m. First I wash my hands, and then have supper. Very often I go to my friend’s place. We discuss our problems, go to the sports ground. We often like visiting different sports and culture events. In the evening I watch TV-news, seldom read books. At 11 p.m. I go to bed.

Features of the character

Let's speak about people and their relationships. In our everyday life we meet a great  number of people. Some of them we see very often, we are in contact with them. Do you know what does it mean "to be in contact"? It means to work with them, to talk to them, to have a rest together and so on. All people want to have friends, to be on friendly terms with people. But sometimes people betray us and we understand that we were mistaken when we considered such people to be our friends. Real friends are always ready to help each other. A real friend makes your life happier and more interesting. He must be warmhearted, faithful, but not envious or smooth tongued. A good friend never boasts or betrays. I have many friends. Some of them are clever, full of humour; others have many hobbies. They like reading, painting, music, photography, collecting stamps, coin sand computer games. In short, they have different interests and that's why I respect them. My best friend is... She is pretty, frank and kind (He is handsome). She is neither dull nor lazy, she is inventive but at the same time she is modest. It's a pity, she is not a brilliant pupil, but she always tries her best to get good knowledge. She is not a chatter-box or a lazy-bone. And what I like most of all is that she is always full of interesting ideas and believes in good future.

My last week-end

A week ago my friend Boris Klimov came to Moscow from Kazan. On Saturday he came to see me and my family. We decided to spend the week-end together and Klimov  stayed with us till Monday. We woke up late on Sunday. We got up at nine o'clock, washed and dressed. Then we had breakfast. "What do you usually do on Sunday?" Boris asked us at the table. "We often go to the country," my wife answered. "Sometimes we go to the theatre or the cinema." "Do you often go to Central Park?" he asked again. "We went there last month. It's a very nice park. We like it very much. Do you want to go there, Boris?" "'Oh, yes, I'd love to. The weather is very nice today. "We went to the park with our children. We skated and skiеd and the children played with their little friends. We came home at two o'clock. Boris and I played chess after dinner and we went to the cinema in the evening. The film was interesting and not very long. It began at seven o'clock and finished at eight. We didn't want to go home so early and went to see my parents. They were very glad to see us and we had supper together. We got home late, but we didn't go to bed at once. Boris wrote two letters to our friends in Minsk and read them to us. We went to bed at twelve o'clock.

What will be there in my new flat.

Every young man wants to live independently. And I’m not an exception. Of  course, the time will come, when I will alone in my flat. I wait for this moment and imagine, that my new flat will be at least three roomed. There will be a study, a bed-room, a dining-room. Of course, there also will be a kitchen and a bathroom. The dinning - room will be big comfortable room with big table in the center. There also will be several armchairs, and a big TV set in it. In this room I shall receive guests. I also shall put a piano in one of the corners of the room and shall start taking piano lessons cause I like this musical instrument very much. The bed-room will become my favorite one because it is a room of rest where everybody can spend several hours without noise and fuss. There I shall put my CD player that helps me very much to relax. Another room – study will be the place where I shall do all my work. There will be a large table with PC and full of papers and several shelves. I am going to gather big collection of books, so they won’t stay empty. That’s how I imagine my future flat. I hope that these dreams will become true.

My city

We are in the centre of a big city. There are high buildings (sky-scrapers) on each   side   of   the   street.   The   traffic   is   heavy:   buses   and   trolley-buses   carrying passengers; trucks and vans carrying mail and loads. There are different kinds of cars running along the streets. Be careful crossing the street, look at the traffic-light: The green light says — go, The yellow says — attention, The red light says — no, no any action. When the green light flashes first look on the left, in the middle of the street look on the right and after that you may go on crossing the road if everything is all right. All the people walk on the pavement (sidewalk). Some of them are in a hurry and others might stop at the large display window, they are interested in some things to buy or they simply look at their own reflection.

Shopping

On a large open corner stands a store, the windows of which run 50 yards down one street and 50 yards down the other. The windows are most attractively dressed. We enter the department store. The first thing that strikes us is its comparative emptiness. There are, indeed two or three people at each counter, but no queues, no people in the centre of the shop. It is true that this store has all that can be found in every grocery. Tea, oatmeal, spices, caviar, bacon, ham, butter, cheese and the rest. Then we pass on into another department. Expensive furs, beautiful evening frocks, gloves, shoes of every pattern and hats. Then we called in the jewellery to buy a birthday present for my sister. The assistant   showed   us   some   lovely   ear-rings,   necklaces,   bracelets,   but   we   finally decided on a very pretty brooch with pearls. Then we called at a dairy to buy milk, cream and a dozen of eggs. At the baker's we bought a brown loaf and two rolls. As I am a great lover of fish we also visited the fish monger's. We saw a good displays of cod, salmon and herrings. We choose some herrings for our supper. That completed our shopping and we went home feeling rather tired.

Books in our life

Every day we read something and can't imagine our life without reading. It may be a textbook or an article in a magazine or a newspaper, an advertisement or a chapter from a famous novel. There are different kinds of books: historical novels and poems, science fiction and adventure stories, detective stories and biographies, fairytales and fables. Besides there are a lot of dictionaries and reference books and hundreds of newspapers and magazines. Why do we read books? Sometimes we want to get some information or to find answers to the thrilling questions of our life. Then we take a book with a serious content. Sometimes we want to entertain ourselves, to relax, to spend free time. Besides we use different dictionaries and reference books when we prepare reports or our homework. Books can tell us a lot about lives of famous people, ancient times, historical events, politics and teenager's problems. Books help to discover new things, educate, solve problems, expand your outlook. Many people have books at home. These are books of their favourite authors. Besides one can get a book in the library. Nevertheless there are people who like reading and those who think that it is a boring thing which takes much time, hurts eyes and causes a headache. As for me, I like books of Russian and foreign writers. My favourite writer is Jack London (1876-1916). He was born in San-Francisco in a family of a poor farmer. From his early childhood he had to earn his living by selling newspapers and doing odd jobs. At the age of 17 he became a sailor. The impressions he gathered during his voyages formed basis of his future sea stories. In 1900 (1876-1916) J. London entered the university but he couldn't graduate from it because of the financial difficulties. Then he worked in a laundry. When gold was discovered in Alaska thousands of adventurers rushed there. Jack London was among them. He wrote wonderful stories about strong and brave people. His stories and novels were true to life. The author created unforgetable characters.

Meals

The usual meals in England are: breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. Breakfast is generally a bigger meal than they have on a Continent. In the morning an Englishman has his favourite breakfast which consists of porridge followed by fried bacon and eggs. Then he has toast with butter and marmalade. Perhaps some fruit will also be eaten. For a change, you may have cold ham or fish, some coffee and a roll. Breakfast is often a quick meal, because the father has to get away for his work, the children have to go to school and the mother has her housework to do. At midday people have their lunch. It consists of 2 courses. The businessman finds it impossible to get home for this, and so takes his lunch in a cafe or a restaurant. For the lunch one can take cold meat, beef, mutton, and veal with boiled or fried potatoes, vegetables followed by biscuits and cheese and a cup of coffee. Afternoon tea follows between 4 and 5 o'clock. This is not generally a formal meal. You may sit anywhere you like and have a cup on your knee and eat thin buttered bread, pastries and a cake. The evening meal is called dinner. Usually a savoury meat course is followed by stewed fruit, pudding and tea, or whatever they can afford.

This group consists of two large islands: Great Britain and Ireland and a collection of about 4000 small islands. Great Britain consists of Scotland, England and Wales. There are no high mountains on these islands, there are many rivers, but they are not very long. The climate of the British Isles is never very hot in summer and not very cold in winter. The UK is a parliamentary monarchy, of which Queen Elizabeth II Windsor is the official head. Her coronation was in 1953. But monarchy today has no power.True power lies in the hands of the Prime-Minister and his Cabinet. The British Parliament was founded in 1256. It consists of two Houses: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The sittings of the Parliament take place in the Westminster Palace. The Speaker is the chairman in the House of Commons; Lord Chancellor is the chairman in the House of Lords. The House of Commons consists of 651 elected Members of Parliament (MPs). 1203 members of the House of Lords are not elected. There are several political parties in Great Britain: the Conservative, the Liberal, the Social-Democratic and the Communist Party. The British flag, known as Union Jack, is a combination of three flags: the Saint Andrew's cross, the Saint Patrick's cross and the Saint George's cross. St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and St. George is the patron saint of England. The official religion of Britain is Christianity.
