"Trade"
Level
4-6 grades.
Purpose
Use the motivation of trading to get students to speak and listen to English. Other purposes can be utilized in this activity.
Introduction
When teaching something like food, there is an opportunity to add extra motivations to students compared to a standard activity or game. If students are allowed to trade foods or other things, then they may experience the joy of haggling. They may also experience greater autonomy, which has been shown to be important for professional development. The opportunity exists to use these motivations to let the students practice English.
Preparation and Materials
The only materials needed are the materials to trade. The handout may need to be printed ahead of time.
Procedure (20min)
1. I give my students pictures assorted gummy candy packets. There can be grape, orange, strawberry, chocolate, etc flavors.
2. I ask my students to pretend the candies are the actual item they are flavored after. If the candy is orange flavored, I ask the students to call 1 packet an orange.
1. When both students make a trade, one will pretend to be a cashier. The other will pretend to be a customer.
2. A twist like, “The students may only trade if they play 2 truths and a lie and the customer can correctly guess which statement the cashier’s lie is,” may be useful. Most games or question exchanges can be embedded in this trading game.
3. Another twist could be to ask the students to study negotiation tactics. Perhaps they can look online how to, “hardball,” each other.
4. You may want to have a trading log sheet for the students to fill out complete with name, trade, and English spoken. This can be used to aide in grading this activity on a rubric.
Extra Rules
Some students may be better at negotiation than others. So it may be necessary to put a maximum a student may have. I usually give the students 3 pictures each, and my maximum is 6.
