I’m glad to see you! Today we are holding the competition “English is around us”. I offer you different challenges of different levels. Your task is to be attentive, creative, and  competitive! Let’s start! 1. For many centuries, during the cold time of the year the English people have been using  coal in their fireplaces in private houses, though something from factories contributed a  great deal to the trouble too.  Listen to the question. What is Britain famous for? And explain the origin of the word. Who will answer? (Britain is famous for its smog = smoke + fog) 2. What is unusual or unique in these words and sentences? kayak (байдарка), level (уровень), racecar (гоночная машина) и «madam» Who will answer? (слова, которые можно читать одинаково слева направо и справа налево) When Proper nouns become Common nouns… What is the word? 3. In 1890 there lived in London a man whose surname was “So and So”. He was a very bad  man and he behaved so badly, that soon everybody in London knew him and talked about  him. When somebody began to behave badly, people said “Oh, he behaves like “So and  So”, and a new word was born. You can find this word not only in English but in some  other languages too. Identify the types of films: An action film – in this type of film, excitement is generated from action sequences. An adventure film – the characters of this film get involved in a series of events which are  unusual, exciting, and perhaps dangerous. A historical film – a film dealing with real events in history. A thriller – in this type of film, the focus is more on human relationships rather than action. A documentary – a film which shows some aspect of human or social activity, or gives  information about a particular subject. A western – a film dealing with life in the western part of the US in times of the wars with the  Red Indians, or one with cowboys, rustlers, sheriffs, etc. 9. Translate the idioms: Steel waters run deep – В тихом омуте черти водятся. Indian summer – Бабье лето. Seedouble – В глазах двоится. Storm in a tea­cup – Буря в стакане. They make a pair – Два сапога – пара. 10. How well do you know Kazakhstan? This famous person was born in Russia and studied at St. Petersburg University. He headed  the Russian Geographical Society for more than 40 years. He was given the epithet in honour  of well­known mountains he studied.  (A tip: His name was Pyotr.) Question: Name the great geographer and the scientist. (Pyotr Semenov­Tyan­Shansky) It’s the most eastern point of Kazkhstan. The region is rich in animals and plants. The highest  point of this mountain range is the mysterious Mount Belukha (4,506 m.). It serves as a natural  “boundary post” between Russia and Kazakhstan.
