Serpukhov is an ancient town which is situated in Moscow Region at the confluence of the Oka and the Nara Rivers, 99 kilometers south from Moscow. The Moscow – Tula railway passes through Serpukhov.
Serpukhov was established in 1339 as a fortress to protect the southern approaches to Moscow. Two years later it was made a seat of the powerful princedom ruled by the cousin of Dmitry Donskoy, Vladimir the Brave.
Vladimir Serpukhovskiy built a new oaken Kremlin on the banks of the Nara and the Serpeika Rivers in 1374.

In Serpukhov there are a lot of places of interest. The most valuable monuments of architecture have been preserved here.
Vladychny Monastery was founded in 1360 by Metropolitan Alexius of Moscow under the auspices of Prince Vladimir the Bold.

Vladychny Monastery contains four churches dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It houses the relics of Saint Varlaam, a 14th-century monk who is considered to be the builder and the first abbot of the Vladychny monastery.
One of the main treasures of the monastery is the wonder-working icon called “The Inexhaustible Cup”.
The peacock – a symbol of the town - is not accidentally depicted on the coat of arms of Serpukhov. Peacocks live in the territory of Vladychny monastery since 1781 year.

Vysotsky Monastery was founded with the blessing of St. Sergius of Radonezh in 1374 by Serpukhov Prince Vladimir Andreevich the Brave. The monastery got its name from the place located on a high beautiful hill, popularly called "High".

Many shrines have already been collected in Vysotsky Monastery. A special place is occupied by the Miraculous image of the Mother of God "The Inexhaustible Chalice".

Serpukhov Museum of History and Art is one of the richest provincial Russian museums and the largest visual arts museum in the Moscow region, famous for its magnificent collection of easel paintings by Russian and Western European masters, works of famous sculptors, as well as works of applied art.

The Museum is located in a former mansion that was built in the late 19th century by the famous Moscow architect Roman Klein.
The mansion belonged to the textile manufacturer, the merchant of the 1st guild Anna Vasilievna Maraeva, a prominent figure in the circles of Old Believers.

The museum collection is based on a collection of works by Italian, French, Flemish and Dutch masters, as well as Russian portrait painters of the 17th-18th centuries.
The collection was acquired by Anna Vasilievna Maraeva in about 1896 from the Moscow collector Yuri Vsevolodovich Merlin, a passionate collector of ancient monuments.
Now the collection of SHAM comprises about 37 000 items. The Museum organizes regular temporary exhibitions from its collection, concerts and other events.
