The United States of America is located in North America. It is one of the largest countries in the world.

The total area of the country is more than nine million square kilometers.

It is washed by the Pacific Ocean and by the Atlantic Ocean.

If we look at the map of the USA, we can see lowlands and mountains.
The Appalachians and the Rocky Mountains, forests, plains, prairies and even deserts, wonderful lakes, waterfalls and rivers cover the American territory that equals about 9,4 million square kilometers.

The longest rivers are the Mississippi (6,400 kilometers), the Missouri (1,600 kilometers), the Colorado, the Columbia and the Rio Grande (3,200 kilometers).

The USA has thousands of lakes of all kinds. They are Lakes Huron, Erie, Ontario, Michigan, Superior.

There are the Great Plains, the Central Lowland and the Mississippi Valley in the USA.

The climate of the USA varies greatly. The coldest region are in the North. The climate of the ceneral part is continental. The south has subtropical climate.

The USA is divided into 50 states. Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. Alaska is separated from Russia by the Bering Strait. It is the biggest and the coldest state of the country.
Each of the states has its own capital, government and symbol.

The capital of the country is Washington D. C. (the District of Columbia).

Washington (D.C) – is the capital of the country. It was named in honour of the first American president (1789-1796).

established in the capital (169 m. high)

This country is made up of 50 states and the independent District of Columbia. Each state has its own state government and state law.

There are three main branches of power in the USA: the legislative, the executive and the judicial.

The head of the executive branch of power is the President. The President should be not younger than 35 years old.

The American parlement (called Congress) has two chambers: the House of Representative and the Senate.

The flag of the United States of America is called “Stars and Stripes”. There are three colours on the flag- red, white and blue.

One of the famous symbols of the USA is the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is a woman who holds a torch up high. She symbolizes a welcome to a land of freedom.

The bald eagle is another symbol, and it represents freedom and strength.

In 1782 it was chosen as the National Bird and then as a national emblem in 1787. You can find it on the Great Seal of the United States.

The White House, the residence of the President, is the oldest public building in Washington and one of the most beautiful.

There is no city like New York. It is known as «The City That Never Sleeps». The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom which is situated here.

Los Angeles is very big, noisy and famous, because Hollywood is situated there.
You can visit Disneyland in Los Angeles.

Chicago is one of the biggest
сities all over the world.

San Francisco is also very popular among the tourists.

San Francisco is a commercial, financial, and cultural center of Northern California.

Boston is one of the oldest cities of the USA.
It is famous for its role in the War for Independence.

There are many museums in Philadelphia.

At present the USA is a highly developed industrial and agricultural country. It is rich in coal, oil, iron and natural gas. It exports a lot of raw materials, industrial and agricultural products.
