More than forty public organizations in Almaty have joined the
union “Tabigat” to protest the damaging effects of oil drilling in the
Caspian Sea. The union formed in response to the “crisis
conditions” of the sea and it’s watershed brought about by both
drilling and transport of drilling platforms. Large populations of
fish, birds and other wildlife have being killed off and the sea bed
has been damaged as a result of this activity.
The union is striving to build an international movement, for a
clean Caspian sea, to promote monitoring of drilling and measures
to protect the sea’s ecosystem and biodiversity.

The Ecological Associations “TABIGAT”
The Director of the ecological association "Tabigat" answers the questions of our reporter.On the
Environmental Protection Day your organization was awarded with International "Global500", the Prize
of the United Nations’ Environmental (UNEF). Could you tell us more about this award? And what
achievements have you been awarded for? Jimy Carter, the US exPresident and the PrimeMinister of
Norway were awarded with it. So, now the "Tabigat" Ecological Association has joined their company. We
try to propose effective ways of solving the problem. Such was the case with the SorBulak –a
sewage pond. That was the most difficult ecological problem for Almaty citizens and citizens of the Almaty
oblast. We decided not to build a thrash combustion plant in Almaty, taking into accountventilation of the
city’s atmosphere. The tabigat Ecological Association was the first to initiate creation of the Charyn
National Park. In addition, a nurserygarden was created to save Kazakhstan greyhounds – Tazy. We
annually organize action aimed at planting trees and thousand of Almaty citizens take part in them.
In 2000 we spoke of very urgent problem of Balkhash lake, as this lake is endangered to have the same tragedy
as the Aral Sea has. In 2000 we initiated the InternationalBalkhash Forum; over 500 people took part in it.
The
Balkhash problem should be solved at the international level. By the way, when I made a welcoming speech
on
the occasion of the “Global500” prize award I tried to attract the Chinese ecologist attention to this problem.
