The opening ceremony, called "Breaking the ice", was held at the stadium on
March 7, where before the race of Paralympic flame was finished. The mascots
of the Paralympic games were selected Ray and snowflake. The ceremony started
at exactly 20:14 Moscow time, symbolizing the year of the first Paralympic games
in the Russian history.
Exciting and touching performance titled "Breaking the ice" was intended to
glorify the power of the human spirit and to tell about how it is important to break
down the barriers of misunderstanding between people. In the storyline of the show
positive changes reflected in relation to people with disabilities, which in recent
years have taken place in the Russian society due to the preparation for the Sochi
Games. One of the Central characters of the opening Ceremony was the magic fire
bird of Russian fairy tales. Her image, which symbolically tied all chapters show
and revealed the soul of Russia, especially for the opening Ceremony was created
by the famous Russian animator and laureate of "Oscar" Alexander Petrov.
To the stadium 126 members of ballet studio "Todes" the biggest dance
ensemble of Russia came. Dressed in white, blue and red suits, dancers marched
down the stage perfectly synchronized with the system, making complex rebuild.

people:
Russian violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov;
Russian gymnast, fourtime champion, two silver and six bronze

of the Paralympic games in ski races and biathlon Valery Kupchinsky;
30 times champion of Paralympic games in athletics Rimma Batalov;
Russian theatre and cinema actress Dina Korzun; Twotime Paralympic champion in biathlon Vladimir Kiselev;
he fourtimes champion, threetime silver and twotime bronze
medalist of the Paralympic games Love Vasiliev;
the 1st senior coach of the USSR and Russia on track and field
athletics Peter Bulow.
The flag was raised to the national anthem of the Russian Federation. The
anthem was performed by allRussian choir of 400 participants. A Choir with the
Protocol scene supported children's choir of 35 gifted children with disabilities.
After the parade of athletes at the scene, representing the enchanted ice of the
lake, 300 fishermen appeared with fishing poles and lanterns, of which 95
dancers with disabilities, and painted on the "ice" magic patterns, ancient Russian
symbols and signs. At the same time, the 25yearold singer in a wheelchair Yulia
Samoilova the accompaniment of the Academic choir of A. Yurlova performed
the song "Together".
The President of the organizing Committee of " Sochi 2014" Dmitry
Chernyshenko and the President of the International Paralympic Committee, sir
Philip Craven made official speeches from the stage. The Russian President
Vladimir Putin announced the Paralympic winter games 2014 in Sochi open.
The culmination of the opening Ceremony of the Games according to the
tradition was the lighting of the Paralympic flame. The first torchbearer became a
fourtime Paralympic champion, the Vicemayor Mountain Paralympic village
Alexey Ashapatov. He passed the torch to the threetime champion of the
Paralympic games in track and field athletics among visually impaired athletes
Olga Semenova. She gave the baton to a threetime champion and twotime silver
medalist of the Paralympic games in ski races among athletes with lesions of
locomotor apparatus Taras Kryzhanovsky and the eightfold champion Paralympic
games on swimming among visually impaired athletes Oksana Savchenko.
The lighting of the bowl of the Paralympic flame was entrusted to the six
times champion, three times silver and bronze medalist of the Paralympic games in
ski races among athletes with lesions of locomotor apparatus, the mayor Mountain
Paralympic village Sergey Shilov and to the twotime Paralympic champion, silver
and bronze medalist of the Paralympic games in swimming among athletes with
disabilities, and to the mayor of the Coastal Paralympic village Olesya Vladykina.
Maria Guleghina and Yulia Samoilova were the leaders of the Opening
Ceremony. It was attended by over a thousand artists (with 140 of them were with
disabilities), as well as 2500 volunteers.
