sea or in the mountains, with nothing to do but walk and bathe.
B. No wonder that one of the latest means of travelling is travelling by plane. Nowadays
people mostly travel by air. It combines both comfort and speed and you will reach the
place of destination very quickly. No doubt, travelling by air is the most convenient and
comfortable means of travelling. But if you are airsick the flight may seem not so nice to
you. Unfortunately sometimes the flights are delayed because of unfavourable weather
conditions, and one more inconvenience is jetlag.
Human beings are very inquisitive and like discovering different places. That is why
people all over the world like to travel around the globe. It is not so interesting for them
to see the world on TV today. It is precious to see it by their own. And when people
come to beautiful beaches and sparkling blue waters, they understand it is really the
amazing thing they wanted to see. There are countless adventures within reach on cruise
vacation. There are many cruise companies in the world, and each of these companies

2. About Conflict Between You & Your Friend.
3. Family Conflicts 4. What is conflicts?
5. Reasons of conflicts.
6. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
7. Resolving conflicts.
8. Conflicts between countries.
B.
A. Conflicts usually appear between parents and their teenage offsprings. Wise
parents try to decide such problems without insulting or pressurizing children.
Teenagers are rather sensitive. They don’t understand that parents have gone
through this and know how behave in certain situation. There are many family
therapists and psychologists nowadays, who help to solve such problems. The
main condition is not to let it become too deep. Every family has problems because
there are no ideal relationships.
Every day you are in contact with people whose values are different from yours.
And you have the right to disagree with their values. But you should understand
that other people also have the right to be different from you. You must respect the
right of other people to have ideas that differ from your ideas. People who respect
each other’s ideas can resolve conflicts in a peaceful way. If people resolve
conflicts peacefully, they will have better relations in the future.
In literature there are many conflicts. As an example, I can offer the novel by A.S.
Griboedov “Woe from Wit”. Basic conflict here is confrontation between the
representatives of the past and present centuries, so called “generation gap” I
advice you to read this book.
C.
E.
D. Conflicts is a natural thing in our life. Conflicts happen because people are
different: they want different things, they have different ideas and their values are
different. Very often people have conflicts because the do not listen to each other
well. They think about what they want to say and don’t really hear what the other
person is saying.
There is no fixed definition; to put it in simple words, conflict is a situation in
which it is difficult for two persons to exist together peacefully. It is a
misunderstanding between people. Conflicts usually happen when something that
is good for one person is bad for another person. So people quarrel, argue or even
fight with each other.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN
General Assembly on 10 December 1948, was the result of the experience of the
Second World War. With the end of that war, and the creation of the United
Nations, the international community vowed never again to allow atrocities like
those of that conflict happen again.
Friendships are important at every stage in life. Although friends can positively
affect your emotional wellbeing and social development, conflict with friends is
often a source of stress and frustration. How you manage disagreements with your
friends influences the quality of the friendship. Understanding the components of a
good friendship and developing skills for maintenance of and conflict resolution in

A. British Private Education
B. Education in Russia
C. Education in Canada
D. British Private Education
E. American Schools
F. University Education
1. Citizens of Russia have the right for education which is guaranteed by the
Constitution. The public educational system in our country incorporates pre
school, general school, specialized secondary and higher education. Pre
school consists of kindergartens and creches. Children there learn reading,
writing and arithmetic. But preschool education isn't compulsory children
can get it at home. Compulsory education is for children from 6(7) to 17
years of age.
2. Seven per cent of British schoolchildren go to private schools called
independent schools. There are 2,400 independent schools and they have
been growing in number and popularity since the mid1980's. Parents pay
for these schools, and fees vary from about 250 pounds a term for a private
nursery to 3,000 pounds a term or more for a secondary boarding school.
Most independent schools are called prep (preparatory) schools because they
prepare the children for the Common Entrance Exam which they take at the
age of 11. This exam is for entry into the best schools.
3. The American system of school education differs from the system in some
countries. There are statesupported public schools, private elementary
schools, and private secondary schools. Public schools are free and private
schools are feepaying. Each individual state has its own system of public
schools. Elementary education begins at the age of six with the first grade
and continues up to the eighth grade.
4. There are 44 universities (not counting the Open University) in Britain.
Although the Goverment is responsible for providing about 80 per cent of
universities income it does not control their work or teaching nor does it
have direct dealings with the universities. The grants are distributed by the
Secretary of State for Education and Science.
5. The school system of Canada is very much like the one in the USA, but
there are certain differences. Education in Canada is general and compulsory
for children from 6 to 16 years old, and in some provinces — to 14. It is within the competence of the local authorities, and therefore it may differ
from province to province. For example, Newfoundland has an 11grade
system. Some other provinces have 12grade systems, and Ontario has even
a 13grade system. Grades 1—6 are usually elementary schools, and grades
7—12 are secondary schools. In some provinces there is a kindergarten year
before the first grade. Задание 8. Установите соответствия между текстами AE и заголовками

1. Clothes in our life.
2. School Uniform.
3. Fashion.
4. Fashion and my attitude to it.
5. Is Fashion Important For Me?
6. Fashion in the past.
A. Fashion has always had a huge influence on people around the world. The
main reason why we try to follow the latest fashion trends is a desire to look
stylish, attractive, popular and more confident. Generally people judge a
new person by his appearance and his clothes and only then, by his inner
qualities. There is a proverb: “Good clothes open all doors.” That’s why we
do our best to make a favourable impression on others. We spend a lot of
money to keep up with fashion and buy designer clothes. Fashion often
means style, glamour and success. It is also a big business. It’s hard to resist
the temptation to buy some brandname clothing in our modern world
B. I am glad to say that I don’t pay so much attention to fashion and I am not its
victim. I don’t care too much about what other people wear. The most
important thing for me in the outlook is neatness, natural look and beauty.
And it should certainly suit the occasion. I must admit that some fashionable
clothes are quite ridiculous and unpractical. There was a time, for instance,
when young people wore baggy clothes, shoes on enormous platforms, red
hair, black fingernails and bright makeup. To my mind, it was just a silly
waste of money. Besides, if a person doesn’t have a good taste he is not able
to put things together and look attractive and stylish even in fashionable
clothes.
C. School uniform is an integral part of school life in many countries. Most
schools in Russia also require school uniforms. However, some school
accept freestyle outfit. There are different opinions on how the standard
school forms should look like. Some schools have dark blue uniforms, while
others use dark red or dark green colours. Some schools in Russia accept
white shirts and black skirts for girls and black trousers for boys.
Nevertheless, all these school uniforms have something in common. They all
look rather smart and strict. Children’s opinions on school uniform differ.
Some say they like wearing it, while others prefer to wear a pair of jeans and
a Tshirt. D. The fashion is really important for me. I always read the fashion magazines,
watch the fashion shows and try to use this information in my everyday life.
It is easy for me to find fashionable and beautiful clothes in the different
malls and boutiques. It is not necessary to spend a lot of money to look
great. It is very important to have your own style. I buy skirts, dresses and T
shirts which are good for my body shape and style. And when the item goes
out of fashion, we shouldn’t throw away it. It will be back in fashion.
E. Clothes are an important part of modern life. It’s hard to imagine how
people can live without clothes. There are various styles of clothes
nowadays, so people can choose what to wear on different occasions. As for
me, I have a good collection of clothes in my wardrobe. There are a couple
of school suits which are of classic style. Then I have some jeans and T
shirts for casual days. And at last, I have a couple of bright dresses for
parties or special occasions. Most of all I like wearing ordinary jeans with
matching shirts. I think it’s not only convenient but also stylish. Задание 9. Прочитайте тексты и установите соответствия между

3. National language of Wales.
4. National symbols of Wales.
5. National symbols of England.
6. England.
7. The Geographical Position of Wales.
8. Mount Snowdon.
A. Welsh is a Celtic language that is spoken in the principality of Wales. It is very
different from English. The Celts arrived in Europe in the fifth century BC.
Before the sixteenth century, Wales had a rich literary tradition and everybody
in Wales spoke Welsh. Until the 1960s, Welsh was not taught in schools and
English was the only official language. A few years ago, only 500 000 out of a
population spoke. However, now it is growing again.
B. The national flower of England is the rose. The flower has been adopted as
England’s emblem since the time of the Wars of the Roses civil wars (1455
1485) between the royal house of Lancaster (whose emblem was a red rose) and
the royal house of York (whose emblem was a white rose).
The national flag of England, known as St. George's Cross, has been England's n
ational flag sincethe 13th century. Originally the flag was used by the maritime s
tate the Republic of Genoa
C. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland covers an area of
some 244 thousand square miles. It is situated on the British Isles. The
British Isles are separated from Europe by the Strait of Dover and the English
Channel. The British Isles are washed by the North Sea in the east and the
Atlantic Ocean in the west. There are no great forests on the British Isles today.
The British Isles have many rivers but they are not very long. The longest of the
English rivers is the Severn. It flows into the Irish Sea.
D. Wales has its own interesting culture including language, customs, holidays and
music. The country is represented by the symbol of the red Welsh Dragon, which is depicted on the national flag. The flag of Wales, brought to Britain by
Romans, is one of the oldest in the world. Other symbols of the country are
leeks and daffodils. These are usually worn on St. David’s Day, which is
celebrated on the 1st of March. St. David is the patron saint of Wales. The
country has its own national game called rugby.
E. Wales is a part of the United Kingdom. The country borders on England in the
east and is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea in the west. Wales is
not a very big country with a population of about three million people. There are
two official languages in Wales – Welsh and English, both of which are taught
in schools. Much of Wales’s landscape is mountainous, especially in the north
and central regions. The highest mountain is Snowdon. There are also a lot of
beautiful lakes in the country. These are Wales’s picturesque landscapes that
attract tourists from all over the world.
F. England is the largest and the richest country of Great Britain. The capital of
England is London but there are other large industrial cities, such as
Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and other famous and interesting cities
such as York, Chester, Oxford and Cambridge. Stonehenge is one of the most
famous prehistoric places in the world. This ancient circle of stones stands in
Southwest England. It measures 80 metres across and made with massive blocks
of stone up to four metres high. Why it was built is a mystery.
G. Wales is a land of mountains and valleys. The highest mountain is
Mount Snowdon in the Snowdonia National Park. A 1682 survey estimated that
the summit of Snowdon was at a height of 3,720 feet (1,130 m); in
1773, Thomas Pennant quoted a later estimate of 3,568 ft (1,088 m) above sea
level at Caernarfon. The unique environment of Snowdon, particularly its rare
plants, has led to its designation as a national nature reserve. Задание 10. Установите соответствие тем A – H текстам 1 – 7. Занесите

Global warming is the term used to describe the relatively dramatic rise in
the world’s average temperature during the 20th century. According to some
environmentalists, global warming is a result of the industrial revolution and that if
it continues, it will destroy civilization as we know it. Global warming is a
problem, and people must take any steps they can in order to prevent it. Speaking English gives people many privileges in society, enabling them to

communicate successfully with those who don’t know your mothertongue. In
order to possess these privileges school teachers and methodologists propose to

Bradley Pitt.
William Bradley Pitt was born on 18th December, 1963, in Shawnee,
Oklahoma (USA). He had a happy childhood and school life, and he went to the
University of Missouri to study journalism and advertising. At university he started
acting and in 1987 he left before he took his degree. He went to Hollywood.
Life in Hollywood wasn’t easy. At first he couldn’t find any acting jobs, but
by 1989 he started getting small TV and film roles. Then nine years ago, in 1991,
he got his first main role as a DJ in the film Thelma and Louise. He was on screen

The continent of Africa is one of the most warlike continents – there’s
always a war or several wars there. Angolan people, for instance, don’t seem to
remember what living in peace is like. They’ve never experienced peaceful life for
long. From the 16th century up to 1975 Angola belonged to Portugal and was its
overseas territory. The fight for freedom never stopped but when independence
was gained at last, an intense civil war broke out.
The main opposing forces were UNITA, which stands for National Union
for the Total independence of Angola a MPLA – The People’s Movement for the
Liberation of Angola. These two political parties were originally founded to free
the nation from Portuguese colonial rule. However, after independence was
declared, their military confrontation subjected Angolan people to further
suffering. Officially, the civil war was considered to be over in 2002, but the
country is still being torn apart by major and minor conflicts.

Charles Darwin.
Darwin had not planned to be a scientist. He wanted to become a doctor. But
he was interested in plants and animals.
A friend who knew about Darwin's interest in nature invited him to take the
trip. Charles was 22 when he left England for a fiveyear trip around the world.
This trip is a very important one in the history of science, for it led Darwin
to write one of the worlds most famous books. The book is "The Origin of
Species".
It gives Darwin's ideas of how all the plants and animals of today have come
from the very simple plants and animals that first lived on the Earth. Darwin was
seasick for much of the voyage, but he came back with the notes for his great book.
He visited the Galapagos Islands, Australia, New Zealand. There he saw
many strange plants and animals. These were Darwin's chief ideas: many more plants and animals are
produced than can possibly live. There is no two plants and animals, even of the
same kind, which would be exactly alike.
The idea that all the plants and animals of today came from the simple plants
and animals of long ago is called "The theory of evolution"
