Comment on the following statement. Write 200 – 250 words.

Mind the rules of essay writing.

Eternal youth is the concept of human physical immortality  free of aging. The youth referred to is usually meant to be  in contrast to the depredation of aging,  rather than a specific age of the human lifespan.

Amy Winehouse

Much can be said about the late Amy Winehouse, one of the U.K. `s main vocalists during the 2000s. The British press and tabloids seemed to focus on her disruptive behaviour, heavy consumption of alcohol, and tragic end, but fans and critics embraced her rugged charm, arrogant sense of humour, and distinctively soulful and jazzy vocals. Her first album, “Frank” (2003), obtained comparisons ranging from Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan to Macy Gray and Lauryn Hill. On the other hand, her charm had always been her song writing - usually deeply personal but best known for its brutal frankness.

Born to a taxi-driving father and a pharmacist mother, Winehouse grew up in the Southgate area of northern London. Her early life was surrounded by jazz. Many of the uncles on her mother`s side were professional jazz musicians while at home she listened to and absorbed her parents` selection of greats: Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra among others.

At the age of 16, after she had been expelled from London's Sylvia Young Theatre School, she got her first chance when a schoolmate and close friend passed on her demo tape to an Island Records agent. At the end of 2003, when she was 20 years old, Island released her debut album, “Frank”. Winehouse`s combination of jazz, pop, soul, and hiphop received enthusiastic reviews.

Following Winehouse`s debut, her tempestuous public life was constantly on the press. Several times she showed up to her club or TV performances too drunk to sing a whole set. In 2006, her management company and her family finally suggested that she should enter rehab for alcohol abuse. Instead, she exorcised her demons and transcribed her torment into the hit song “Rehab”, the lead single for her second and critically acclaimed album, “Back to Black”, released in October 2006. The new album explored the sounds of `50s / `60s-era girl group harmonies, rock & roll, and soul and it sold millions all over the world.

Increasingly, her personal life began to overshadow her career. Her erratic behaviour kept her and her new husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, in the tabloids constantly, and on and off stages on both sides of the Atlantic. The next few years would be filled with drama, disappointment, and very little music. By 2009, her marriage had ended in divorce, she had repeatedly been arrested on assault charges and / or public order offenses, and her struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues tragically played out in the press. Public performances had turned into incoherent disasters, the worst of them posted to video sharing sites for everyone to see.

Winehouse was found dead in her Camden, London apartment on July 23, 2011. It`s believed her death was due to a suspected vodka overdose. In August 2011, her album Back to Black became the UK`s bestselling album of the 21st century. Winehouse`s final recording, a duet entitled “Body and Soul” with Tony Bennett, was released on 14 September 2011 to commemorate what would have been her 28th birthday.

    Exercise 1

The problem of drugs is the problem of the present and future. Drug abuse causes multiple problems in societies all over the world because addicts cannot function as normal members of society. They abuse the families and they increase crime. They steal to have money for drugs. The police have to fight with smuggling while criminals and mafia gangs develop with the money from drugs.

8.    Musical style and influence

A.  The members of Aqua first met around 1989, when Soren, Claus, Rene worked together to produce a soundtrack  for the Danish film “Naughty Frida and the Fearless Spies”. The three were brought to make the soundtrack, after getting along well, they decided to work together again on a future project. In 1994, Rene, Claus and Soren met Lene, and together they formed the group “Joyspeed”, later renamed “Aqua”.

B.  Aqua announced in the interview that they would release a brand new studio album in 2010. There will be no tours in 2010 as Aqua will be in the studio, working on the new album. They said in the interview that they decided to release a new album, because “Back to the 80s” and the new “Greatest Hits” (2009) did so well.

C.  Aqua was very quite throughout 1999, deciding to concentrate on the recording of their second album “Aquarius”. It was released in February 2000. Gaining instant popularity with fans, “Aquarius” climbed steadily to the top.

D.  By the summer 2001, problems between the members of Aqua were becoming apparent. Rene had been dating Lene, when the group first starts releasing material under the Aqua  name. Lene had begun dating Soren. Reports of a rift between the three had been reported in the Danich press. Other reports had included that Rene was annoyed at his  having a lesser role on the Aquarius album, and that the group was beginning to have other creative differences. Lene had also had some health problems, having collapsed on  stage during 2001 tour. In July, the group announced that they were going to be parting their separate ways.

E.  Aqua`s influences include ABBA, Ace of Base and C+C Music Factory. The style of Eurodance was dance music with a female singer and a male rapper. Aqua followed a more traditional verse-chorus structure. Usually, the verse would consist of Lene starting and finishing, while Rene would sing in the middle. Aqua are best known for the dance tracks such as “Barbie Girl”, “Doctor Jones”, “Lollipop (Candyman)” and “My Oh My”, although they also made slower tracks such as “Turn Back Time”, “Good Morning Sunshine” and “We Belong to the Sea”. At the end of the 1990s, interest in Eurodance music waned.

F.   Aqua released their album Aquarium around the world in the autumn of 1997. Although the album sold well, many still wrote the group off as a one-hit wonder. Despite this, and much criticism from the media, Aqua had made their international breakthrough, and was known around the world.

G.  After Aqua`s split in 2001, many fans felt it would be the last they hear of the world`s most popular bubblegum dance act. However, the band has reunited, and in press conference on Friday 26th of October 2007, they made the news official. They told reporters that they plan to tour 2008, with some 30 destinations already planned out.

The group sold an estimated 28 million albums and singles. Aqua is also listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the huge amount of concerts and interviews they have given (2300 interviews and 220 concerts).

A.  Jennifer Love Hewitt is the daughter of two medical professionals, who divorced, when she was just 6 months old. Hewitt is one a rare child song-and-dance stars, who`s managed to navigate the tricky road to adult success as a film and television actress. Hewitt got her first name from her 8-year-old brother Todd, who chose the name Jennifer as homage* to his grade school crush, showed an early passion for music. She started performing at the age of 3, when she made her debut as a singer at a livestock fair. Two years after her performance at the fair, Hewitt`s mother enrolled her daughter in jazz, ballet and tap dance classes. In 1989, a talent scout recommended that Jennifer and her mother, Pat, move to Los Angeles, so Hewitt could pursue better acting and dancing opportunities. It turned out to be sound advice. Hewitt quickly found work, appearing in television commercials for companies like “Mattel Toys” and “LA Gear”.

B.  Hewitt tried to cash in on her new celebrity with a second album of songs. This one released to an American audience. The album performed poorly, and the performer returned to the studio again to record what would become a 1996 self-titled album. And while it didn`t produce any chart topping hits, Hewitt`s voice and style earned some praise from skeptical critics. “Her feathery light voice is more soulful than you`d imagine”, wrote one reviewer. Hewitt released her fourth album, “Barenaked”, in 2002, and followed up with “Cool with You: The Platinum Collection”, a compilation released in Asia in 2006.

C.  Jennifer Love Hewitt is an American actress, singer and songwriter, was born on February 21st, 1979, in Waco, Texas. She was on Disney`s “Kids Incorporated” as a child actor. In 1992, she released her first album, “Love Songs”. In 1995, she earned the part of Sarah on the TV drama “Party of Five”. Her big break came with the lead in the horror film “I Know What You Did Last Summer” in 1997. In 2005, Hewitt debuted on the CBS Drama “The Ghost Whisperer”, which lasted five seasons. She returned to TV in 2012 on the series “The Client List”. She married and had a child with her “Client List” co-star Brain Hallisay.

D.  In late 2007, Hewitt was shown sporting a bikini on a beach in Hawaii that seemed to indicate a tad more girth** than what fans had come to expect. The photograph coursed through the Web, attracting snarky comments from bloggers and others. Hewitt rushed to her own defense, and fired back at the commentators. Hewitt`s love life has also been a subject of scrutiny***. The actress, who continued to live with her mother well into her 20s and has long proclaimed she doesn`t drink, smoke or swear has been linked to a bevy**** of celebrity boyfriends, including singer Enrique Iglesias, musician John Mayer, talk show host Carson Daly, comedian Jamie Kennedy, actor-model Kip Pardue, singer-songwriter Rich Cronin and actor Will Friedle, among others. In November 2007, she became engaged to Scottish actor, Ross McCall. The pair had been dating for two years, but a little more than a year after their big announcement, the pair called off their wedding plans and their relationship. On June 4, 2013, Hewitt announced that she is expecting her first child with “The Client List” co-star, Brian Hallisay. They met on the set of the series “Love Bites” in 2010, and started their relationship in early 2012. The couple gave birth to a daughter, Autumn James Hallisay, in November 2013. Between the announcing of the pregnancy in June and the birth in November, the couple quietly got married.

E.  Soon Jennifer was invited to a regular part on Disney`s “Kids Incorporated” (1984 – 93), a music driven show that catered perfectly to Hewitt`s talents. Those same skills were also on full display for the 1991 release of the “Dance! Workout with Barbie” video, which featured the young actress. In 1992, Hewitt stepped up her profile as a singer – at least overseas – when she released her first album, “Love Songs”, a saccharine-sweet collection of romantic teen ballads. There was also plenty of additional acting work, including a role in the 1993 film, “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit”, co-starring Whoopi

Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. In 1995, Hewitt earned the kind of successful television gig that

had previously eluded her, starring as the pretty girl-next-door in the Fox Television drama, “Party of Five” (1994 – 2000). Stepping into the role during the program`s second season, Hewitt soon became a household name, earning nominations from the “Kids Choice Awards” and “Teen Choice awards”, as well as helping the program land a “Golden Globe Award” for Best Drama  in 1996.

F.   The later part of Hewitt`s career has seen her refocus her career on her television work. In 2005, she debuted as the lead star in the new CBS drama, “The Ghost Whisperer”, in which the actress plays Melinda Gordon, a young newlywed who can converse with the dead. The show has not only brought Hewitt a stable run of success (she earned a Saturn Award for Best Actress in a Television Program in 2007) but a renewed love life. After

The Ghost Whisperer” ended its successful run 2010, Hewitt remained in television. In 2012, she took on the lead role in the Lifetime series “The Client List”. The series centered on Hewitt as Riley Parks, a woman in Texas, who straddles the line between being a single mother and working as a massage therapist. The show was canceled in 2013 after its sophomore season*****.

G.  As much as she could, Hewitt also continued to find more acting opportunities. Film work was a part of the mix, with roles in “House Arrest” (1996) and “Trojan War” (1997). Her big break, though, came the same year as the release of “Trojan War”, with the lead role in the surprise scream-fest hit, “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. Jennifer made movie executives millions, and she earned herself big-time Hollywood stardom. While a sequel proved to lack the same kind of commercial punch, Hewitt scored another hit in 1998 with “Can`t Hardly Wait”, whose story line centered on a night at a final high school party. Hewitt then starred in the unsuccessful “Party of Five” spin-off “Time of Your Life”, which found Hewitt's character relocating to New York to seek her real father. The show only earned enough ratings to make it halfway through the 1998 – 99 television year, and the actress started making moves to shed her teenage status. She attempted some fairly ambitious roles starting in 2000, when she starred in the made-for-TV movie, “The Audrey Hepburn Story”. A year later she starred alongside Sigourney Weaver and Gene

Hackman in “Heartbreakers” (2001), which was followed up with a family action comedy “The Tuxedo” (2002) alongside Jackie Chan. As one might expect, Hewitt`s stardom has been accompanied with some criticism, both of her acting and her looks. Citing her performances in “The Tuxedo” and “Garfield” (2004), she was discussed as a possible “Worst Actress” nominee for the “Razzie Awards”, annual ceremony.

Now we live in one of the beautiful places in the world. I am very happy. We have our own house not far from the beach.
