A.   Whether they take their tea with milk, sugar, lemon or just plain, it’s clear that the British have a fondness for its flavor. There’s something about that firm bitterness that sparks devotion: the British consume 60 billion cups per year, according to the Tea and Infusions Organisation. That’s more than 900 cups a year for every man, woman and child in Great Britain – though we no doubt all know someone who likes many more than that. Tea has become entrenched in the British way of life, from the humble tea break to the afternoon tea to be enjoyed – in a jacket and tie, of course, gentlemen – at the very swankiest of London hotels.

B.    Foreigners often say that food in Britain is uninteresting and plain, nothing fancy, it lacks originality and excellence. But British food is not as bad as some people think. There are many enjoyable dishes which can please even a demanding eater. A characteristic feature of British food is the high quality of the ingredients and the simplicity of the way in which they are used. British food is greatly influenced by local agricultural conditions and depends on geography and climate. For instance, in Scotland, where oats grow better than wheat, local dishes use oatmeal rather than wheat flour. Scottish national dish, porridge, using oats, is only eaten with a pinch of salt.

C.    It is a popular and relatively inexpensive British dish. It consists of a plaice or cod fried in batter and is served hot with fried chipped potatoes. The dish is sold in special shops. You can eat it in the shop and it can be taken away. You can eat fish and chips in the street as you walk along, or take it home. Traditionally fish and chips were served up wrapped in old newspaper. Nowadays they are wrapped in greaseproof paper and sometimes paper that has been specially printed to look like newspaper. You often get a small wooden or plastic fork to eat them with too, although it is quite ok to use your fingers.

D. Pub culture is an integral part of British life, especially student life. Pubs are a place to go to socialise, relax and have a drink. Going to pubs is fun. However, having said that there are some social rules attached to visiting the pub and knowing them will make your experience more enjoyable. You will find that many pubs are the hub for their local community, which means they are a great way to meet people. Some are also known for a certain thing, such as a venue for a certain genre of music or their quiz night. There are pubs that are known for being a place where people gather to watch a certain sport or support a certain football team.

Тips for setting the table
