RIDING A HOBBY HORSE

Life in the 21st century is hectic and chaotic |keɪˈɒtɪk|. As one famous poem says:

‘A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare’.

Our life revolves mostly around work and studies nowadays. Strict teachers and constant tests at school, annoying colleagues and difficult tasks at work, ups and downs in relationship... All this stresses people out. What is more, many health problems like heart attacks and depressions are caused by nowadays fast-moving lifestyle. That's why people look for a safe haven when they can relax and have a rest from daily routine. There is nothing better than a good hobby for this.   From the old English word ‘hobby’ meaning horse, came the modern word hobbyhorse. Hobbyhorse has been shortened to hobby to describe any favourite leisure time occupation. This word has become rather common in modern usage. For many people today, the focus on leisure and pleasure is the major preoccupation wonderfully summed up in the saying ‘TGIF’ – ‘Thank God It’s Friday’. I can’t but mention that today teen’s lives revolve around technical world. Almost everything they do is somehow connected with gadgets. The young generation is fond of communication. There are many available methods of communication nowadays, and the most popular one is computers. The Internet seems really good fun. But teens are crazy about social networks and spend a lot of their free time online. And it can cause a serious computer addiction. Nowadays world offers a wide range of affordable hobbies one can choose from. Just stretch yourself, hop off the sofa and dive into this fascinating world of hobbies.

   If you are a nature-lover and like the feeling of adrenaline going through your veins you might want to take up an adventurous hobby, something outdoorsy and sporty like parachuting, mountain climbing or hiking. These hobbies will give you an opportunity to explore picturesque places and enjoy marvelous views. Some of these hobbies may be really dangerous and challenging. But people who are bored to death sitting behind a desk all day long are very often ready to take risk.

It is also may be time and money-consuming. But be sure that the benefit you get from your hobby will outweigh the costs as it has numerous advantages. All scientific researches and opinion polls show that hobbies have incredible power in transforming our life. Hobbies bring new colours and discoveries into our life and improve its quality. Hobbies give us a great satisfaction, sense of achievement, and many positive emotions. They help build confidence in teens. They also broaden our horizons and improve memory, develop talents, creativity and imagination.

Sporty hobbies also have a positive impact on our health helping us to stay in good shape. What is more, hobbies encourage friendships. When you join a club or a society you meet many like-minded peers. You start sharing your passions, plenty of time, plans and dreams with them. It is a wonderful way to make friends with many people. It seems that if teens today are more involved in activities, there wouldn’t be as much violence or criminal activity going on today.

All in all, hobbies are one of the greatest pleasures in life. Don't deprive |dɪˈprʌɪv| yourself of this joy.
