London is the capital of Great Britain. It stands on the river Thames and stretches for over thirty miles from
east to west. London is an ancient city. It was founded more than two thousand years ago.
Its population is over 8 million people. London is the biggest industrial and cultural centre of Great Britain.
London is a great port. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, the West End, the East
End and the Westminster Abbey. In London one meets the past and the present, the old and the modern. It is
a city of contrasts. It has many wonderful places of interests.

Student 3 We begin our excursion from one of the largest parks in London, Hyde Park, which opened to the public in
1637 It is the largest of several royal parks in London that are connected to each other, forming one large
green lung in the center of the city. The park is famous for its Speakers' Corner where every Sunday people
stand on a soap box and proclaim their views on political, religious or other items, sometimes interrupted
and challenged by their audience.
Student 4 And now we're going down the Baker Street. The street is most famous for its connection to the fictional
detective Sherlock Holmes, who lived at a fictional 221B Baker Street. Look on the left. You can see
Madame Tussauds museum. It is a major tourist attraction in London, displaying waxworks of famous
people. Today's wax figures at Tussauds include historical and royal figures, film stars, sports stars, and
famous murderers.

Student 5 Now we are coming to Trafalgar square. Trafalgar Square, the largest square in London, is often considered
the heart of the city. Ever since the Middle Ages, this area has been a central meeting place. The name of the
square commemorates the victory of Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson over the French fleet at the Battle of
Trafalgar, a naval battle that took place on the 21st of October 1805 near Cape Trafalgar, just off the
Spanish coast. In the middle of the square stands a tall column honoring admiral Nelson.
Student 6 On the north side the neoclassical National Gallery, built between 1834 and 1838, overlooks Trafalgar
Square from its elevated position. The museum is home to an impressive collection of paintings, spanning
six centuries. You can admire works from some of the world's most famous painters, including Rubens,
Vermeer, van Gogh, Titian, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Renoir and Claude Monet.
Student 1 Our next stop is The Tower of London. Construction of the Tower of London was initiated in 1070 by
William the Conqueror. The Tower was built to enforce the power of the Norman king over the newly
conquered land. It is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London.
Today the Tower of London is best known for its Crown Jewels, but it used to be notorious for the many
political opponents of the kings that were locked, tortured and killed in the Tower. The Tower was also a
royal residence: several kings lived here.
For many centuries ravens guard the Tower of London. The legend says “If the Tower of London ravens are
lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it.” Or so the legend goes! Truth be told, nobody
knows exactly where this tall tale originates, but what we do know for sure is that at the Tower, they take
this folklore very seriously. 7 ravens are kept at the Tower of London at all times – 6 of whom make up the
number of ravens that is said to need to remain in order to protect the crown, and 1 of whom acts as a back
up…just in case!

Student 3 We continue our tour. Now you can see Westminster Abbey. It is more a historical site than a religious site.
Since 1066 every royal coronation, with the exception of Edward V and Edward VIII has taken place in this
church. The abbey also serves as the burial ground for numerous politicians, sovereigns and artists. The
abbey is stuffed with tombs, statues and monuments.
Student 4 Now you can see Buckingham Palace, one of several palaces owned by the British Royal family, is one of
the major tourist attractions in London. A part of the palace is still used by the Royal family. A flag is
hoisted each time the Queen is in the Palace. The palace is not only home to the royal family, there are also
a number of staff members living here. The palace has about six hundred rooms, including a throne room, a
ballroom, picture gallery and even a swimming pool. The Changing of the Guard in front of the palace
always attracts plenty of spectators.

Student 5 Our last stop is The Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster, is the seat of the two
parliamentary houses of the United Kingdom. The most famous feature of the Houses of Parliament is its
clock tower. The Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster officially named Saint Stephen's Tower is
commonly known as the Big Ben. The tower is one of London's most famous landmarks. The clock inside the tower was the world's largest when it was installed in the middle of the nineteenth century. The name
Big Ben actually refers to the clock's hour bell, the largest of the clock's five bells. The other four are used
as quarter bells.
