Self-education will make you a fortune (Jim Rohn)..docx
"Formal education will make you a living; selfeducation
will make you a fortune."
Jim Rohn
Meaning – Education in school can be good, but it isn’t everything. It
will teach you how to be an employee, but not give you the experience
to be the owner of a company or to achieve greatness. Teaching yourself
by modeling successful people will get you the biggest results.
We often need an advice on how to increase earnings thinking about
starting a business or trying to take business to the next level. Nearly
every time we revolve around one of my favorite quotes:
“A formal education will make you a living, but selfeducation will
make you a fortune.” – Jim Rohn
All too often small business owners and entrepreneurs are so focused on
the daytoday operation of their business that they fail to continually
educate themselves. From finances to parenting to spiritual growth, a
recipe for disaster in any area of life is to rely solely on formal education
to draw from when making decisions.
Formal education is great and I am certainly not proposing that it is
unimportant or even unnecessary. The reality, however, is that formal
education will help you get a job but it is not designed to take you to the
next level. If you stop at formal education you will find yourself hitting
a ceiling on your growth and becoming frustrated with your earnings. Selfeducation utilizes the base you received with formal education and
allows you to see things in a new light. If you are not spending time
daily educating yourself beyond what you learned in a formal setting
you will never reach the levels that are possible for you. Selfeducation
opens your eyes to new ways of solving problems and gives you access
to knowledge passed down from some of the greatest business men and
women to live. When you selfeducate you can draw from the
knowledge that took others a lifetime to gain. If you take selfeducation
serious by taking notes while reading, putting action steps in place from
what you learn and making changes in your life or business based on
what you have learned you will be amazed at the growth you
accomplish.
There are many ways to selfeducate in our age of technology. With this
said, reading is still my favorite means. I often get excuses from people
saying they are not good readers, or they don’t comprehend what they
read. If this is you there are other options available such as audiobooks
and podcasts that you can download and listen to while driving to and
from work, during your exercise routine or at any other time that fits into
your schedule. If you find that time is an issue, look into Stitcher Radio,
which is an app that you can get for your smart phone that allows you to
listen to podcasts at 1, 1.5 and 2 times speed. This lets you listen to a 30
minute podcast in 15 minutes.
Other forms of selfeducation are selecting a mentor to meet with
monthly, hiring a coach that is an expert in your area of business or
attending seminars that specialize in what you are trying to accomplish. Look into mastermind groups or web forums or find an expert in your
field that blogs and follow them. These are just the examples that I
thought of quickly and I am sure we can have many more ideas already
going through our mind.
Jim Rohn is an international influencer, a motivational speaker, and an
uplifting American entrepreneur. Furthermore, his famous success quote
about selfeducation is suitable for many.
With a discussion of selfeducation, what I would like to add is the key
relation to selfdetermination.
Selfteaching and Intrinsic Motivation autonomously go handin
hand.
This selfdetermination perspective reflects my opinion of a self
directive for lifelong learning. Selfeducation is learning in
its purest form, where one decides what, how, and why they
are mastering a particular topic.
Selfeducation does not mean learning alone, rather, the subject matter
is independently chosen.
You can easily learn from others but what you choose to learn is
developed from one’s own unique perspective. Almost everyday this
unknowingly happens because learning is what helps us understand
our worlds, however, deciding what you want to learn is an active and
introspective decision. Yet selfeducation can be much more than just reading, it can also
include pursuing constructive hobbies, learning new skills, or engaging
in group conversation and debate. It may also include learning to play an
instrument or music, or perhaps taking up other artistic or literary
pursuits. Selfeducation can also include teaching yourself a new skill
through trial and error, or learning a new skill or trade under the
instruction of a qualified teacher or class.
Selfeducation—and the pursuit of knowledge and truth—should be the
goal of all men, regardless of how they may achieve it, or how they may
perceive their own intelligence. There is simply no excuse for ignorance.
Although I personally have a college degree, I am not some sort of elitist
snob who equates a degree or higher education with intelligence or
knowledge. In fact, in many cases, a degree is nothing more than a very
expensive sheet of paper. The pursuit of knowledge does not require a
degree or formal education to validate it, nor does it necessarily require
those things to achieve it. Selfeducation is liberating, enlightening, and
is a lifelong pursuit, and it is up to you how you achieve it.
