Look at the topic and think what you are going to write about. What is your view of the problem? Are you for or against?

Make a plan. Think of two or three arguments for each position.

Think of any counterarguments to the opposite position.

Paragraph 1. Make an introduction (state the problem)

Paragraph 1. Make an introduction (state the problem)

Paragraph 1. Make an introduction (state the problem)
Paraphrase the topic and formulate a problem.

e.g. Some people think that the weather affects the way people feel, whereas others do not agree.

Useful phrases and words for introduction:
There is a popular opinion that…
Nowadays the problem of … causes a lot of controversy …
There are different views on …
It is common knowledge that …
Whereas
While
However

Paragraph 2. Express your personal opinion and give 2-3 reasons for your opinion

Paragraph 2. Express your personal opinion and give 2-3 reasons for your opinion

Paragraph 2. Express your personal opinion and give 2-3 reasons for your opinion.

Try to change the words, using synonymic ones. E.g. affect – influence – impact – to have an affect on.
- I think that the weather indeed influences the way people feel and behave.
- I guess that actually the weather impacts the way people feel and behave.
I my opinion the weather obviously has an affect on the way people feel and behave.
- First of all, I would like to say that people are part of the environment and have a direct connection with it.
Useful words and phrases:
I think
I guess
As far as I’m concerned…
I believe
In my opinion…
To my mind
From my point of view…

Paragraph 3. Express an opposing opinion and give 1-2 reasons for this opposing opinion

Paragraph 3. Express an opposing opinion and give 1-2 reasons for this opposing opinion

Paragraph 3. Express an opposing opinion and give 1-2 reasons for this opposing opinion.

e.g. At the same time there are people who say that the weather does not affect our mood and behaviour at all.
- In contrast, there are people who think the weather does not affect what we feel and how we behave.
- However, there are people who think the weather does not affect what we feel and how we behave.
- Even though it is obvious that the weather influences what we feel and how we behave there are people who think differently.
-Despite the obvious fact that the weather influences what we feel and how we behave there are people who think differently.

Paragraph 4. Explain why you don't agree with the opposing opinion

Paragraph 4. Explain why you don't agree with the opposing opinion

Paragraph 4. Explain why you don't agree with the opposing opinion. Give counter arguments to each opponent’s argument.

e.g. There are people whose mood is not influenced by the weather, however, the number of such people is very small. They are more the exception than the rule. It is a well-known fact that weather influences our mood and physical conditions, or else they would not pay so much attention to weather broadcasts.

Some people argue that…

Paragraph 5. Make a conclusion restating your position

Paragraph 5. Make a conclusion restating your position

Paragraph 5. Make a conclusion restating your position. Restate your position again using different words, but don’t give new information!

e.g. In conclusion, I would like to say that there are opposing views on this issue. At first sight, the weather might seem not to influence people's behaviour but in actual fact, weather, our mood and behaviour have a straight connection, which is proved by human experience and scientific researches.

Useful words and phrases:
to conclude (in conclusion, to sum up, in summary)

THE WEATHER AFFECTS THE WAY PEOPLE

THE WEATHER AFFECTS THE WAY PEOPLE

THE WEATHER AFFECTS THE WAY PEOPLE FEEL AND BEHAVE.

1 Some people think that the weather affects the way people feel, whereas others do not agree. They believe that the weather does not have any impact on people's mood and actions.
2 I think that the weather indeed influences the way people feel and behave. First of all, people are part of the environment and have a direct connection with it. For example, rain and mood. Most people feel sad when it rains. Second, clear sunny weather raises one's mood and as a result their behaviour becomes more upbeat, kind, tolerant and gentle. In addition, I guess that the body produces positive hormonal reactions in sunny weather better. For example, vitamin D that is absolutely necessary for people's life can be only produced by using sun light.
3 At the same time there are people who say that the weather does not affect one's mood and behaviour at all. They believe if a person is positive he or she will always feel good no matter how bad the weather or any external conditions are. They meditate and are always in a good state of mind.
4 I cannot agree with the opinion mentioned above for a particular reason. There are people whose mood is not influenced by weather. Nevertheless, the number of such people is very small. They are more the exception than the rule.
5 In conclusion, I would like to say that weather greatly influences our mood and behaviour. The warmer and more sunny the weather is the better people feel and kinder they behave. However, one must aspire to find some ways to control their psychological conditions and not be dependent on weather too much. It might be yoga, philosophy, psychological training, or anything that works well for a person.
