a dam located on the Iset river in the Historical square of Yekaterinburg. The dam is an embankment of small extent, but of considerable width. It was from this place that the construction of the entire city started. Rare species of Ural larch, which is not afraid of moisture, and granite were used for construction. ,

In 1886, a square appeared on the dam with busts of important personalities for the creation of the city – Peter I and Catherine I. But they did not have to decorate the center of Yekaterinburg for a long time: during the revolution of 1917, red army soldiers who came to the Urals dropped the busts into the city pond. Later, monuments to famous Ural writers will appear in their place: the place of the first Russian Emperor in 1958 was taken by P. p. Bazhov, but the bust of D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak appeared on the place of Catherine I only in 1987.
In the 1830s and 1850s, the dam was expanded and equipped. the authors of the reconstruction projects were Ural architects-M. p. Malakhov and A. N. Spiring.
In 1962-1973, during major reconstruction, the dam was once again expanded and faced with granite. Bas-reliefs related to the history of the city's Foundation were placed on the retaining wall.Later, there was an exit from the lower terrace of the Historical square to the upper platform.

what I like about DAM

For citizens, the dam of the city pond is one of the most popular public areas where concerts, holidays, and folk festivals are held. This is a favorite place for newlyweds, and therefore the fence of the dam is hung with many locks-talismans for happiness in family life. Locals often use the dam for meeting friends, pleasant walks, romantic dates, and for beautiful photos. Several interesting sights can be found on and near the dam. In the Historical square there is a monument to the founders of the dam and, consequently, the city itself Tatishchev and De Gennin. The townspeople gave the sculptures funny names, Beavis and Butthead, in honor of the animated series of the same name.
The dam of the city pond is good at any time of the year. In summer, there is a musical fountain with lighting. Boats and catamarans for rides on the city pond are available for rent for everyone. In the Historic square, near the monument to the city's founders, skateboarders and roller skaters practice tricks and local artists are waiting for their orders. The underground passage is very popular among street musicians and graffiti artists. In winter, the bravest citizens cut their way across a frozen pond and ski.
