A man from silent films.
Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in 1889 in south London. His father died when he was a
child, and the family didn’t have much money. Charlie first performed on the theatre stage at
the age of five.
After he joined Frank Karno’s company, he went to the USA in 1914 and in his first year there
he acted in 35 of Hollywood’s early films. These were “silent films”: before the invention of
cinema sound the actors couldn’t speak, but acted out their feelings in their faces and
movements. Charlie Chaplin became one of the most famous actors in the world, and everyone
knew and loved the role he played: a man with a black hat, big shoes, a little moustache and
unusual walk.
With other actors, Chaplin formed a film company and he started to direct his own films. Later,
after sound arrived, he began to talk on the screen and he wrote the music for one of his last
films. Twentyfive years before his death in 1977, he moved away to live in Switzerland. Most
people still like his films today.
Put sentences in correct order:
A. He acted in sound films.
B. He joined Frank Karno’s company and went to the USA.
C. When he was 5, Charlie played on the stage.
D. He moved to Switzerland in 1952.
E. He acted in silent films.
F. Charlie formed a film company.

Top Tips for writers.
None of us find writing easy. When you can’t see the person who
you are talking to, (15) …. is much more difficult. You have to be
(16) … to communicate your message clearly, but how
do you do that? The first thing you must think about is who you are
writing to. Then you can make a (17) … about how formal it should
be.
A letter to a friend is more like (18) … English,
so your (19) … should be in your writing, while a letter to a hotel
manager is formal. You also need to think about what kind of thing
you are writing.
The language in a story, for example, should have a lot of (20) …,
COMMUNICATE
CARE
DECIDE
SPEAK
PERSON
EXPRESS INFORM
INTRODUCE
CONCLUDE
CHOOSE
but the
language in a report or an article should have more (21) … .
When you are writing a formal essay, make sure the (22) … gives a
general idea of the subject. Later, in the (23) … you should
summarize your opinion.
Each time you write you have to make a (24) … about what you are
going to do. If you do that right, then there’s nothing to stop you
becoming a good writer.
