The Russian Federation
The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. It occupies about one-seventh of the earth’s surface. It covers the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia. Its total area is about 17 million square kilometers. The country is washed by 12 seas of 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Arctic. In the south Russia borders on China, Mongolia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the west it borders on Norway, Finland, Baltic states, Belarus, and the Ukraine. It also has a sea border with the USA.
The country has such a great variety of scenery and vegetation. We have steppes in the south, plains and forests in the midland, tundra and taiga in the north, highlands and deserts in the east.
There are several mountain chains on the territory of the country: the Urals, the Caucasus, the Altai and others. The largest mountains are the Urals which separate Europe from Asia.
There are over 2 million rivers in Russia. The longest river of the European part is the Volga, it flows into the Caspian Sea. The main Siberian rivers – the Ob, the Yenisei, and the Lena- flow from the south to the north. The Amur in the Far East flows into the Pacific Ocean. Russia is rich in beautiful lakes, the deepest lake in the world is Lake Baikal.
The Russian Federation is divided into 11 time zones. On the vast territory of the country there are various types of climate, from arctic in the north to subtropical in the south. In the middle of the country the climate is temperate and continental. Russia is a multinational state, the Russians comprise about 80 % of population and all the rest 20% are represented by over 100 nationalities. It is so because all the territory has a very complicated division: 46 Regions, 22 Republics, 9 Territories (Krais), 4 Autonomous departments (Okrugs), 3 Federal Cities and 1 Autonomous region.
Russia is a parliamentary republic. The head of the state is the President. The legislative power is exercised by the Federal Assembly which is divided into 2 houses – the Federation Council and the State Duma.
The capital of Russia is Moscow. It is its largest political, scientific and cultural center. The city is situated on the Moskva river. The main sights of the city are the Red Square, The Kremlin, different outstanding cathedrals, museums, theatres and , of course, the Underground (Metro), famous all over the world with its stations which are known as architectural masterpieces. The national symbols of the Russian Federation are a white-blue-red banner, an anthem and a double-headed eagle.
