History
Слайд № 3 ( 4, 5,6 )
About Easter (о Пасхе) - Easter is the oldest and the main Christian
holiday. It is set in honor of the Jesus Christ`s resurrection from death
according to Christian belief. However, Easter in Britain has its beginnings
long before the arrival of Christianity. Many theologians believe Easter itself
is named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn and Spring- Eostre.
That is why the Easter comes in spring (in March or April). It`s a religious
celebration and it lasts for a week.

As celebrate Easter (как праздновать Пасху). People start preparing for
Easter with the Lent which lasts (49 days - in Russia and 40 days in
England). There are three most important days: MaundyThursday (
чистый четверг) ,Good Friday( Страстная Пятница), and Easter
Sunday(Пасхальное Воскресенье).
Maundy Thursday – is the Thursday before Easter. Christians
remember it as the day of the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of
his disciples ( [dɪˈsaɪpl] ученики), and established the ceremony known
Eucharist( [ˈjuːkərɪst] Таинство причастия). In Britain the Queen takes
part in the ceremony of the Royal Maundy, which dates back to 13th
century. This involves the distribution of Maundy Money to deserving
senior citizens( one man and one woman for each year of the sovereign’s
age) (на каждый год жизни монарха). Usually chosen for having done
service to their religious community. They receive ceremonial red and
white purses. The white purse contains coins made especially for the
occasion- one coin for each year of the monarch’s reign( [reɪn]
правления). The red purse contains money in place of the gifts that used
to be given to the poor.Up to the 17th century the King or queen would
wash the feet of the selected poor people as a gesture of humility, and in
remembrance of Jesus Christ, but now it doesn’t happened anymore.
Good Friday- It is the Friday before Easter Sunday. It is a day of
mourning in the eve of Easter Sunday, when Christians remember the day
Jesus was crucified, who died to atone for human sins. (Good Friday - это
день скорби в преддверии Пасхального воскресенья, когда христиане
вспоминают день распятия Иисуса, принявшего смерть во искупление
человеческих грехов.)
Easter Sunday- is the day of abundant( [əˈbʌndəntJ обильное) food.
After the Great Lent the best and the most delicious food is on table.
Symbols and Traditions
Слайд № 5 (19,20,21,22 )
If we compare symbols and traditions from each county they are different,
in some , but very similar in the most of . Many of them are connected
with renewal, birth, good luck. In Russia very important is an Easter
greeting (Пасхальное приветствие) In Russia there is a custom of a
general kissing. After a greeting people say: «The Christ revive (
Христос Воскрес)" – "Truly revive" ( Воистину Воскрес)- people kisses
three times . It is a distinctive feature of the Russian Easter. In other
countries anything similar isn't observed. The Orthodox Christians are
going to church where the Easter eggs, «paska» are blessed by the priest
at the end of the Paschal Vigil ( вечерие) (which is equivalent to Holy
Saturday), and distributed to the faithful.

There are many Easter symbols in Great Britain: Unlike in Russia , the most
important symbol is an Easter Bunnies , and Chicks. Easter Rabbit is a
kind symbol of Easter in England. It is a very innocent animal. The
Easter Rabbit symbolizes abundance. However the bunny as an Easter
symbol seems to come to UK from Germany, where it was first mentioned
in Germany writings in the 16th Century.

The most important symbol in England,as in Russia, are eggs. They are a
symbol of spring and new life. All families color eggs. Easter parade and
games take an important part of entertainment in Russia and England.
The rolling eggs. People simply roll eggs from any hillock( холмик) or
make trays. When sliding egg hits about the egg lying on the earth, the
player takes away this egg. Another game is called an egg fight. The rule of
the game is simple. One holds a hard-boiled egg and taps the egg of
another participant with one's own egg intending to break the other's,
without breaking one's own. As with any other game, it has been a subject
of cheating; eggs with cement, alabaster, and even marble cores have
been reported.

A traditional way of breaking the Lenten fast is to prepare an amazing
abundance of food. Of course, the main decoration of a table is «paska»-
Easter bread. As a rule, a lot of relatives and friends are gathered around
the Easter table. Everyone is given a beautiful egg and a small kulichik.
Easter table in England. On Easter Sunday people eat a traditional roast
dinner with lamb, potatoes and vegetables. The table is usually decorated
by chocolate nests for eggs, chocolate eggs and hares from dough. Sunday
morning hot cross buns are given for tea. Friends and relatives give each
other chocolate eggs in which sweets are hidden.
Conclusion
Слайд № 9 ( 33,34)
In Conclusion the holiday Easter has no permanent calendar date
but is celebrated as in Russia and England in spring. In General, traditions
the celebration of Easter in the two countries are very similar, despite the
fact that each country has its own differences that are associated with
some cultural, climatic features. At Easter, English students are on
vacation, the whole country has four state holidays , in Russia, there isn’t
the official day off, but it doesn’t meant the Russians are celebrate less,
they also have festive days. There is a lot of fun and games for Easter .
From its begging till these days Easter is no less bright and joyful holiday
in England and in Russia. Happy Easter and Христос Воскресе.
