Протоанглийский Английский язык имеет корни в языках германских народов Северной Европы. Во времена Римской империи большинство германских поселений (Германия) оставалось независимыми от Рима, хотя некоторые юго-западные районы находились в составе империи. Некоторые германцы служили в римской армии. Войска германских племён, таких как тунгры, батавы и фризы, служили в Британии под римским началом. Германские поселения расширились в период Великого переселения народов с падением Западной Римской империи. Языки, на которых говорили германские народы, изначально поселившиеся в Великобритании, входили в состав западно-германской ветви германской языковой семьи.
