The problems of our region Natural wonders of the Urals region On the one hand the Urals is one of the most  beautiful and richest in natural resources  regions in the world. The Ural Mountains  are magnificent museum of geology  created by nature: almost all the  elements from Mendeleev’s classification  table can be found there. There are more than 3 thousand lakes in the  Urals. The most famous of them are  Shartash and Baltym lakes not far from  Ekaterinburg and lots of Chelybinsk  lakes known by their beauty. The land of the Urals owns considerable  forest resources: its share in the total  volume of state timber purchasing  amounts to 15 percent. There are 4 natural reserve zones in  Chelyabinsk region: Ilmen state reserve,  the national park Zyuratkul, the national  park Taganay, Arkaim.

Ilmen state reserve is located in the central part of the Chelyabinsk region near he town Miass.  On 14 of May 1920 by the Lenin’s  decree Ilmen mountains were announced mineralogical  reserve, one of the first reserves, created in Russia. The aim of the reserve is to preserve the  natural condition of the natural complex realization of fundamental scientific researches of  geological­ mineralogical ecological and biological profile.

The Natural Park Zyuratkul is located in the southern part of Satkinsky district of Chelyabinsk  region. The location of the Park Zyuratkul on the border of two natural zones – taiga and forest  – steppe has led to the richness of flora and fauna.

Lake Turgoyak is deep. Its average depth is 19  meters, and the maximum reaches to 36.5  meters. Lake Turgoyak is famous for its transparency which reaches 10 to 17 meters. Its water  is close to the Baikal. Turgoyak is called the brother of lake Baikal.

Ecological problems of the Urals On the other hand we must speak about the environmental crisis in the Urals. Air  pollution, water pollution and soil pollution are extremely high in the Middle  Urals. The reason of this dangerous situation is that a great number of  industrial plants are concentrated in the Urals. Ekaterinburg,Nizhny Tagil,  Kamensk – Uralsky, Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk are the biggest centres of  heavy industry in our country. The main polluters in the Urals are enterprises of  mining and chemical industries,ferrous and non­ferrous metal plants. They emit  different harmful substances, carbon monoxide,  and sulphur anhydride are the  most widely spread.                       The first radioactive explosion took place in Kyshtym, near Chelyabinsk, at the  chemical enterprise “Mayak” in September 1957. Many people had to move  from their native places, many of them died from oncological diseases. So, the environmental degradation in the Urals continues to accelerate. Urgent  measures to improve the ecological situation should certainly be taken. But this  problem is not easy to solve.
