The monarch of Australia On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary  and constitutional monarchy comprising six states and several territories .
Canberra is the capital city of Australia Canberra is the capital city of Australia. With a population of 381,488, it is Australia's largest inland city and the eighth-largest city overall. The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), 280 km (170 mi) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 mi) north- east of Melbourne. A resident of Canberra is known as a "Canberran". Although Canberra is the capital and seat of government, many federal government ministries have secondary seats in Sydney, as does the Governor- General and the Prime Minister.
Sydney, Australia's oldest city Sydney, Australia's oldest city, was founded in 1788 by Arthur Phillip. He lead a fleet of 11 ships with British convicts sent to this remote destination to relieve the overcrowded British jails. Few of those aboard this 'First Fleet' could have imagined their small settlement would grow into a large cosmopolitan metropolis. Today Sydney is one of Asia- Pacific's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its sunny weather, fine beaches and great landmarks like the Opera House.
Cities and towns
From the history of Australia But for many centuries Australia was marked on the maps as “terra incognita”. The first man who reached the Australian coasts was Willem Jansz, a Dutch seaman. He landed on the northern coast of the continent in 1606. The northern and western coasts were investigated by the Dutch in the 17th century. The sailors named the continent New Holland. In 1770 James Cook, a British navigator, reached the coasts of Australia. He was the first to investigate Australia and named a lot of its mountains and bays.
The climate and the nature of Australia Australia is the most droughty continent on the earth. About one half of its territory is occupied by deserts and semideserts. It is also the land of great plains. The main part of Australia lies in tropics. Southwestern parts of the country are situated in subtropics. December, January and February are summer months in Australia. Droughts are common in Australia. The rainfall in the country is rather small, and that’s why a special plan was worked out for irrigation of plains.
Australia is an agricultural country Australia is an agricultural country. Cattle-breeding is highly developed in Australia. It exports sheep wool, wheat, meat, butter and cheese, and raw materials. Its major partners are Japan, the USA and Great Britain.

Fauna of Australia The red kangaroo is the largest macropod and is one of Australia's heraldic animals,]  appearing with the emu  on the coat of arms of Australia . The fauna of Australia consists of a huge variety of animals; some 83% of mammals, 89% of reptiles, 24% of fish and insects and 93% of amphibians  that inhabit the continent are endemic to Australia. To target threats to the survival of its fauna, Australia has passed wide-ranging federal and state legislation and established numerous protected areas.
Australian flora Many species of plants in Australia are found nowhere else on earth, except where they have been introduced by humans. Such species are known as endemic species  . This distinctiveness is the result of the long isolation of the Australian continent from other landmasses.
Australian vegetation Australian vegetation is dominated by two types of plants—the eucalyptus and the acacia. There are 569 known species of eucalypts and 772 species of acacia. Nevertheless, a great deal of botanical diversity exists throughout this large continent.
