ENTRY Since childhood, we all love O. Henry and his novels – kind and ironic  stories, in which love and justice always triumph, and evil is trampled  and punished on merit. Unfortunately, the biography of O. Henry was  far  from  this  ideal.  The  writer  suffered  a  lot  before  wealth  and  popularity  came  to  him.  And  they  did  not  bring  happiness  to  the  master of the word. A few interesting facts from the life of O. Henry,  whose  destiny  was  full  of  mystery  and  at  other  times  resembled  the  plot of one of his own works than a biography of an ordinary person.

HOW DID THE PSEUDONYM APPEAR? Everyone  knows  that  O.  Henry  is  just  a  pseudonym  of  a  humorist.  Unfortunately, far fewer readers will be referred to as the present full  name  of  the  author  William  Sydney  porter.  And  hardly  anyone  will  say  how  he  came  up  with  a  fictional  name,  because  the  biographers  are  still  looking  for  a  definite  answer  to  this  question.  The  most  common legend is as follows. Early having lost his mother, and after  some time and drunken father, the future Creator was forced to earn a  living on their own.

Man, for the fullness of his life, must experience poverty,  love and war. But not immediately. «O. Henry.»

At  the  age  of  15,  he  was  behind  the  pharmacy  counter  for  the  first  time. Much later, porter, working already in the prison pharmacy, took  the  name  of  the  eminent  French  colleague­O.  Henri.  Transkriberade  such  in  English,  the  writer  acquired  the  pseudonym  to  publish  his  work.  However,  the  "pharmacy"  version  is  not  the  only  one  in  a  number  of  variants  of  the  origin  of  the  surname.  There's  evidence,  Henry  is  a random  name,  and O.  is  a random  letter.  Somewhat  later  than  the  original  alias  in  the  journals  appeared  the  stories,  the  authorship  of  which  allegedly  belonged  to  one  Oliver  Henry.  Biographers  still  suggest  the  origin  of  the  fictional  name­up  to  the  abbreviated  name  of  the  prison  where  the  writer  was  serving  his  sentence.

CREATIVITY OF O. HENRY The subjects of their works, the comedian often drew from life. But, unlike  creativity, fate is not always pleased with the author and his family happy  end. Thus, the famous "gifts of the Magi" were written after porter of the  races rushed to his dying wife at Christmas. He managed to say goodbye to  his beloved in this bright holiday, and she – to give her husband the last gift  – a gold chain for his watch. The poor woman did not know that these same  hours porter sold a few days earlier, so that the money to buy a ticket to a  forgotten hometown.

The main characters of books by O. Henry­a small and poor residents of a  huge metropolis, the dashing boys of the gang areas, the brave cowboy, the  hard­working  farmers,  artists,  writers,  and  other  creative  personalities...  most of the works of the American writer is written in the genre of realism,  although  there  are  works  fantastic  in  nature  and  with  elements  of  mysticism.  These  include  the  stories  "  magic  kiss”,  “roads  of  fate”,"  furnished  room",  "Mirage  on  the  cold  river"  and  some  others.  Through all the work, starting with the first literary specimens, the writer  has carried a love of humor. Many of his stories are full of witty jokes and  funny tales, so they will be interesting to children and adolescents.

In  the  creative  Treasury  of  O.  Henry­more  than  two  hundred  and  fifty  stories and novels published in collections and individual works. The first  major book of the writer was the novel "Kings and cabbage", published in  1904.  In  it,  he  introduced  the  term  "banana  Republic"  to  qualify  the  country.  This phrase was later widely used to describe a small, unstable country with  an  agrarian  economy.  It  was  this  work  that  brought  the  writer  the  greatest  fame.  Behind  him  came  other  collections  of  short  stories:  "four  million",  "  the burning lamp”, "a Noble Rogue", "rotation" and others.

CONCLUSION After reading the biography of O. Henry, getting very sorry for  the poor writer, whose life was so bad. We can say that there was a  period  in  the  writer's  life  when  he  didn't  feel  necessary,  but  the  ending is just horrific: frustrated, lonely death ... what if all is good,  if the meaning of life and not be found. Death had erased all. Were  only  good  memory  of  posterity,  but  that  Henry,  alas,  will  never  know.
