Task 1. Read silently and underline new words. Then study the picture and discuss the meaning of the new words with your partner.
Temperature
helps us understand how hot or cold something is. It's a measure of how much
heat energy is in an object or substance. We use thermometers to measure
temperature, which is expressed using different scales. The three most commonly
used temperature scales are
Fahrenheit (°F), Celsius (°C), and Kelvin (K).
(/ˈsel.si.əs/) Celsius (°C):
This scale is part of the metric system and is used in most of the world for weather, everyday temperature measurements, and scientific research. Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C.
(/ˈfær.ən.haɪt/) Fahrenheit (°F):
It is the oldest of the three main scales and primarily used in the United States, particularly for weather reporting and cooking. Water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F.
Kelvin (K):
This is an absolute temperature scale where 0 K represents absolute zero. It's widely used in scientific research, engineering, and thermodynamics. The relationship between Celsius and Kelvin is: K = °C + 273.15.
