Cooling system.

1. Today we are going to learn about the cooling system of a car. Why do you think a cooling system is important?

English

Russian

Examples

Cooling system

The cooling system prevents the engine from overheating.

Radiator

The radiator transfers heat from coolant to air.

Thermostat

The thermostat controls engine temperature.

Coolant / Antifreeze

Coolant keeps the engine from freezing or overheating.

Water pump

The water pump circulates coolant.

Fan

The fan cools the radiator.

Heat exchanger

The radiator acts as a heat exchanger.

Overheating

The engine shuts down when overheating occurs.

Temperature control

The thermostat ensures proper temperature.

Excecise 1: Match the words with the definitions:

1.Cooling system

A. The component that transfers heat from coolant to air

2. Radiator

B. A device that regulates engines temperature by opening and closing to control coolant flow

3.Thermostat

C.The system that prevents the engine from getting too hot or too cold

4.Coolant/Antifreeze

D. A liquid that absorbs heat and prevents freezing or boiling in the engine

5. Waterpump

E. The part that circulates coolant through the engine

6. Fan

F. A device that creates airflow to cool the radiator

7. Heat exchanger

G. Transfers heat from one liquid to another

The cooling system in a vehicle is essential to keep the engine from overheating. The main components are the radiator, water pump, thermostat, cooling fan, and coolant. The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator. The thermostat regulates the temperature by opening and closing to allow coolant flow. The radiator transfers heat from the coolant to the air, assisted by the cooling fan. If the system fails or the engine overheats, it can cause serious damage.

Answer the questions:

1.      What are the main components of a cooling system?

2.      What is the function of the radiator?

3.      Why is the thermostat important?

4.      What happens if the cooling system fails?

·         How does a cooling system work?

·         What components are involved?

·         What might happen if a component malfunctions?

4.2 Make up a dialogue. One of you is a mechanic. Another is a customer.

Customer: Can you explain how the cooling system works?
Mechanic: Yes, of course. The cooling system includes a radiator, water pump, thermostat, and fan.
The water pump circulates coolant through the engine...

·         Fill in the table:

Компонент

Функция

Почему это важно?

Radiator

Thermostat

Water pump

·         What new information about the cooling system have you learned?

·         What words were the most difficult?

·         What questions have you got?

·         What are the main components of a cooling system?

·         What is the function of the radiator?

·         Why is the thermostat important?

·         What happens if the cooling system fails?
