The text under analysis is an extract from the novel of J.G. “The man of Property”. This extract describes Soams’ contradictory(противоречивые)feelings after he had taken advantage of Irene(воспользовалсяИрен). It is a narration and non-personal represented speech reflecting(отражающий)Soams’ thoughts. It is written in a rather gloomy(мрачный) mood, the key word being “haunt”(преследовать). The situation was that Irene refused to fulfil(выполнять) her duty(долг)as a wife, locking herselfin a separate bedroom, of course this situation aroused(вызвала)Soams’ protest, but somehow he did not violate(нарушать)Irene’s privacy. But he was provoked(спровоцирован)to actions after Mrs. Mac.Ander’s remark “And so your wife is a great friend of Mr. Bossiney’s?” The author repeats the word “incentive”(стимул, толчок)twice to stress the fact that Mrs. Mac.Ander’s words pushed Soams to action. Irene’s reaction to his action shocked Soams. Galsworthy describes Irene’s condition very colorfully “terrible smothered sobbing(задыхающиесярыдания)”which aroused(вызывать) in Soams “intolerable(невыносимый) feeling of remorse(раскаяние)”. And he felt ashamed(стыд)of what he had done. His feeling of remorse is stressed by the emotional word “haunt” and “silently slinking(крадучись) away”. Soams was concentrated on this the whole day. We see it in the sentence “nightmare-like doubts(сомнениякаккошмарныйсон); the sound of smothered sobbing was in his ears again”, “memory of Irene’s tear stained face(заплаканноелицо)”. All these quotations(цитаты) show that Soams loved Irene very much and did not want to hurt her feelings but was provoked to it, as the author puts is “by a fierce(свирепый)jealousy, which had turned to fiercer desire(кещебольшемужеланию)”. Soams hated being discussed by his relatives (родственники), especially was he against his private life being discussed. Being torn(разрываемый) by doubts he was still seeking(стремящийся)for justification(обоснование)of his actions “one thought comforted him-it was not sort of thing that she would speak about”. Besides(крометого)he thought that he had but done his best to sustain(поддерживать)“the sanctity (священность) of marriage, to prevent (предотвратить) her from abandoning(отказавшийсяот) her duty” On the whole, the text is very emotionally colored, the author resorts(прибегает)to many emphatic(выразительный)stylistic devices -sustained(продолжающийся) metaphor – “when he vehicle(повозка)of his daily business… started rolling”, “his nerves had been shaken”, “Slumber(дремота)had removed his doubts”, “barricaded behind the paper(засиделсязабумагами)”. Set expressions “was sold for a song”, “a man of common sense(чувство)”, epithets “terrible-smothered sobbing(задыхающиесярыдания)”, “right-thinking man”, “fierce jealousy(свирепаяревность)”, “conspicuous(бросающиесявглаза)crimes”… We can also trace(проследить)a lot of emotional words: “incentive(стимул)”, “haunt(преследовать)”, “tear- stained(заплаканный)”, “smothered (задыхающиеся)”, “sanctity of marriage(священностьбрака)” So this text shows us how complicated(сложный)are the relationships between husband and wife and that other people should not interfere (вмешиваться)into their relationship.
