What’s an Occupation, Trade, Profession?
An “occupation” is a business, trade, employment or hobby. “I’m a teacher by occupation, and he is a taxi-driver by occupation”. “Knitting (вязание) is a peaceful occupation”.
A “trade” is a way of making a living, especially a handicraft (ремесло). We say “That man is a carpenter (столяр) or a tailor (портной) by trade”. There are different trade school that teach trades, for example, cooking, furniture-making, gardening, etc. All trades are important and useful. Why not learn the trade of a turner (токарь), a fitter (слесарь) or a bricklayer (каменщик)?
A “profession” is an occupation requiring advanced education and special training. For example, the law, medicine, teaching. We say: “He is a lawyer by profession”. Or: Mr. Johnson is a pilot by profession”.
So when we want to know what a person does for a living it is better to ask: “What’s your occupation?” or “What your job?”
