A hobby is what we like doing in our free time. As for me I spend many hours … (reading books/ playing computer games/ watching TV/ listening to music/ playing sport games). It takes me … hours to … because I’m keen on …(sport/music/reading/computer). My mum says I’m too addicted to my hobby but I hope … will be connected with my future profession because I want to be a … . Pets I’d like to tell you about pets. I think pets are our friends. We love them, play with our animals. But my mother says it’s a responsibility. Having a pet is not easy as it seems. We have to walk pets, feed them, have them vaccinated, clean and wash the tank or the cage. As for me I’ve got a cat/dog at home. We call him/her … . He/She is (not very) big. He/She’s got long black fur and clever eyes. I love him/her very much. He/She is really my best friend. Food I’d like to tell you about the traditional British meals. The British people eat many kinds of food, including their classic pudding, pies, soups, stews and sandwiches. The traditional English breakfast consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, toast, baked beans and mushrooms. But not many people in the UK will eat this for breakfast today. A typical English breakfast is more likely to be a bowl of cereal, a slice of toast, orange juice and a cup of coffee. In British schools children have a school meal or bring a packed lunch in the middle of the day. A packed lunch typically consists of a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a piece of fruit and a drink. The packed lunch is kept in a plastic container. The evening meal is usually called dinner or supper. Most people eat curry, rice or pasta dishes for dinner. Vegetables like carrots, peas, onions and cabbage are very popular, too. As for me, I’d like to taste the traditional British pudding because I like sweet meals. The UK I’d like to tell you about the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Some people call it Great Britain or England but it’s not true. The country is situated on the British Isles: Great Britain, Ireland and over 6,000 smaller isles. It consists of 4 parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. People living in the UK are called British. Their nations can be English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish. The capital of the UK is London. It stands on the Thames River. The population of the country is over 65 million people. The country is a constitutional monarchy and officially the Queen is the Head of state. But it is ruled by the Prime Minister and the government. A lot of famous people were born and lived in Great Britain. Among them are Shakespeare, Newton, Churchill, Paul McCartney, Joanne Rowling, Sting, David Beckham and many others. In my future I’d like to visit this country with my family. British Schools In England and Wales Kids start school at the age of 5 and have 11 years of schooling. State education is free for children between the ages 5 and 16. However, there are some private schools (called public schools) where parents pay the fees. Pupils attend primary schools from the age of 5 and then move to secondary schools at the age of 11. At primary school they have to study English, Maths, Science, Design and Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, PE, ICT, Citizenship and foreign languages. At secondary school from the age of 11 to 14 students study 10-15 subjects. They study 5 of them of their choice. After this two-year period students take state examinations. These qualify students to continue to A level for university preparation. Daily Routines I love sleeping, so I never get up before 8 a.m. My mum usually wakes me up. I always have breakfast. After that I do my homework, rest a little and watch TV/play computer games. On …s I have music lessons/ go to sports club/dancing club. I go to school at a half past 1 p.m. School starts at 2 p.m. and finishes at half past 7. After school I’m tired and never do my homework in the evening. I have supper, watch TV or read a book. I don’t often go to bed before 11 p.m., but I never go to bed after midnight. Family Members My name is … . I’m Russian because my parents are both Russian. Besides I live in Russia. I have a mother and a father, their names are … and … . They are … years old. We all live together in a flat in … street in Perm. I’ve got an elder/younger sister/brother. Her/his name is … . She/He is a student/ baby/pupil at school. She /He is … years old. We often visit our grandparents. They live in … . We enjoy having a family dinner when we all celebrate grannie’s birthday in …August. I love my family! My home My family lives in a flat in an apartment block in … Street. We have a two-bedroom unit. It is large and comfortable. There are 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a hall, a bathroom, a toilet and a balcony in our flat. In my bedroom there is a bed, a desk with the computer on it, 2 chairs, a wardrobe, a bookshelf and a lot of toys everywhere. Besides there are some pictures and placards on the walls. The curtains on the window are … (green). I enjoy sleeping, doing homework, working on my computer and listening to music. I like my cosy, modern and comfortable room. Shopping I’d like to tell you about shopping. It became a part of our modern life. There are different goods in different kinds of shops. For example, at a Chemist’s we can buy medicines and other things. We can find electronic gadgets, clothes, shoes, furniture in a department store or in a shopping mall. At a stationer’s or at a newsagent’s they sell newspapers, magazines or many little things. People visit restaurants, cafes, bars or pubs to have a meal or a drink. There are a lot of foreign restaurants: Chinese, Japanese, Italian, French or American. As for me, I often go to a supermarket to buy food; I sometimes go to a bookstore to get books or school things. I like shopping. Computers, TV, the Internet In the 21-st century people enjoy different popular forms of entertainment: TV, video games or surfing the Internet. On the one hand they can watch programs and videos, listen to music, play games or chat with friends using social sites. But on the other hand people become dependent on modern gadgets. Computer users often become isolated from the real world, they spend all their time in front of a monitor. It is bad for eyes. They say that the electromagnetic rays which come from the monitor are bad for people’s body. TV has also become a part of our daily life. Different quiz shows, soap operas and series attract a large number of viewers. Sport programs, documentaries, films, plays, news, shows give information on everything from weather to pop stars’ life. But there is also much danger to spend too much time watching TV. As for me, I like (watching …, playing computer games, reading electronic books, chatting with my friends, listening to music) using my (computer, lap top, mobile phone, touch pad). Music I’d like to tell you about music in our lives. Music is powerful. It can make people smile or cry. Everyone enjoys some sort of music. There are different styles, or genres, of music. Some of them are classical, jazz, blues, rock-n-roll, rap, R-n-B, hip-hop, folk and metal. Music can be heard everywhere: in a doctor’s office, at the airport, supermarket, restaurant. People often listen to their favourite music or to the radio via their mobiles going in the street. Music is soothing and relaxing. Music is used for special events. Every country has its national anthem. People all over the world sing “Happy Birthday” on their friend’s birthdays. As for me, my favourite style of music is …. . It helps me think of happy moments of my life and relax.
