цифру только один раз. В задании есть один лишний заголовок.
1. Easy to cook
2. A healthy alternative
3. Coffee shop brownie
4. What the dish is like
5. Serving ideas
6. Created by chance
7. Health risks
8. National dessert
A. Warm, freshly baked chocolate brownies are an American invention. Brownies are flat, and baked in a
square or bar shape. They are neither cakes nor cookies, but somewhere in between. They can be eaten by
hand if the brownies are dry and small. Or you can use a fork if your brownie is thick and moist. Anyway,
there is no special etiquette, so there’s no need to care about your table manners
B. Mystery and intrigue surround the birth of brownies. It is hard to reconstruct their true story as there are
different legends about the creation of the famous dessert. Some people say that once a chef added melted
chocolate to the biscuit dough by mistake. Others believe that a housewife just improvised to make a new
dish. However, all these tales may be very far from the truth.
C. We all agree that brownies are yummy. And you do not have to be a professional cook to make them. All
you need to do is to mix all the ingredients, pour the mixture into a pan and bake it for about half an hour. If
you prefer softer brownies, cook for twenty minutes. Now, take them out of the oven and let them cool until
slightly warm. Cut into squares. Enjoy the brownies with your tea, milk, or coffee!
D. Brownies look harmless, but they are not. They are high in calories, fat and sugar, and can have a
negative impact on your overall health if you eat brownies on a regular basis. Eating too many of them may
lead to putting on weight and cause your sugar level to rise. This may result in diabetes. Besides, too much
sugar can also increase the chance of developing heart disease. Take care!
E. A regular brownie should be a special treat and not an everyday meal. The easiest way to avoid the
brownies' harmful aspects is to redesign the recipe and use other ingredients. It is recommended to replace
some or all of the oil in a
traditional recipe with puréed fruit, such as bananas, apples or prunes, and reduce the amount of sugar and
salt. Nuts or seeds can be added.
F. Brownies are probably the bestknown American dessert. They're like puddings for the British and
tiramisu for the Italians. Brownies represent a truly American experience. We say 'as American as apple pie',
but some people think the saying should be 'as American as a brownie'. And, each year on December 8,
brownie lovers across the nation celebrate Brownie Day.
G. Traditional rich, dark, chocolaty brownies are loved by everyone. If you want to surprise your guests use
some ingredients to decorate the finished product with style. Whipped cream, fruit and nuts work really well.
A scoop of ice cream and some warm chocolate sauce also make your brownies irresistible. Then, take a
fresh mint leaf and add it to your plate. This final touch adds style and flavour.

April Fools' Day
April Fools’ Day, or All Fools’ Day, is an odd holiday which encourages us to play tricks and fool our
family and friends. There is some uncertainty about when and where this bizarre tradition began. Popular
belief says that April Fools’ Day started in the 16th century in France but there are not enough facts to
confirm it.
Anyway, according to legends and a small number of facts, the story seems to be as follows. Before the 16th
century, the New Year was celebrated in spring, around April 1st. In 1564 King Charles IX of France
declared that the country would start using a new calendar, which changed New Year's Day to January 1st.
In those days, with no communication technologies, news travelled slowly and new ideas were often
mistrusted. Many people still celebrated the New Year the old way. These people were called 'fools' and
became a target for jokers.
Playing jokes on April 1st became a custom and was later transported across the Atlantic to the American
colonies. Nowadays, April Fools’ Day has developed into an international festival of fun.
Today in France, people who are fooled on April 1st are called Poisson d'Avril, which literally means the
April Fish. Children stick paper fish to their friends’ backs. There are different fish souvenirs in the shops
and chocolate fish of all shapes and sizes are sold in supermarkets. In England, if a trick is played on you,
you are a noodle. Remember that in this country you should observe the time limit tricks can be played
only in the morning. People playing jokes after midday are April fools themselves.
April Fools’ jokes should not harm anyone. The best jokes are when everyone laughs, especially the people
the joke was played on.
One of the great April Fools’ jokes happened on April 1st, 1957. BBC TV did a documentary on 'spaghetti
farmers' growing 'spaghetti trees.' The report showed a family from Switzerland carrying out their annual
spaghetti harvest. It showed women carefully pulling long thin pieces of spaghetti from a tree and laying
them in the sun to dry.
The joke was an enormous success. A lot of people were fooled the BBC began to receive hundreds of calls
from puzzled viewers. “Did spaghetti really grow on trees?”, they wanted to know. Others were eager to
learn how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC replied that they should "place a piece
of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best."
Another famous April joke was played by the Burger King Company in the USA in 1998. They ran an
advertisement about launching a “twin brother” of their most famous sandwich Whopper. Along with the
traditional Whopper they were going to sell a LeftHanded Whopper, which was specially designed for the
company’s lefthanded customers. According to the advertisement, they rotated all the ingredients 180
degrees. Amazingly, thousands of customers requested the new sandwich at their restaurants.

Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales. It is located in a national park. It stands at 1085 metres above sea
level, and it is often described as the busiest mountain in Great Britain. Snowdon is very popular with
tourists. If you are strong and brave enough to get to the top, you can enjoy wonderful views from there. On
a clear day, you can see as far as Ireland! During the summer months there is a café at the top. There, tourists
can get a welcome cup of tea, or soup if the weather is cold. If you feel too tired to walk back, you can
always take the train down the mountain. The mountain railway was built in 1896. It is safe, and there have
never been any accidents on this route.
C3 You are going to give a talk about environmental problems. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes

1. Is there any riskfree alternative to tattoo?
2. What equipment is used?
3. What are the motives for getting a tattoo?
4. What is tattoo ink made from?
5. Is getting a tattoo dangerous?
6. What are the most popular tattoo designs?
7. How old is the tattooing tradition?
8. Can tattoos be removed?
A. Tattoos are surprisingly popular in different parts of the globe. The oldest tattooed person, the socalled
Iceman, is a frozen mummy found in the Alps in 1991. The frozen man, aged more than 5000 years, has 57
tattoos! The scientists think that they were created with some sharp instruments like thorns, and ash from
fireplace was used instead of ink. There's also a theory that Iceman's tattoos were made for medical reasons
rather than for any other, reason.
B. Medical tattoos mark the places where acupuncture needles need to be used, however, that reason for
getting a tattoo is rare. Tattooing for religious and spiritual reasons happens much more often. Soldiers and
sailors get tattoos in memory of their battles and journeys. Some people tattoo the names of those they love,
and some get tattoos for no reason at all, just because they think it's cool.
C. There are lots of tattooing techniques. Some tribes in Africa make cuts on the body and rub ash into them.
Tattooists may also work with sharpened sticks or animal bones — the procedure is painful and not at all
hygienic. In modern studios electric machines are usually used. They have one or more needles that quickly
go in and out of the skin. The machine has ink containers and the ink gets into the skin via the needles. For
safety reasons the needles should only be used once.
D. In the past, tattoo ink was made from tree bark, ash and coal dust. Later, pen ink was often used. Today,
the inks produced by factories are usually made of metal salts and metal oxides. Heavy metals are used for
colouring too: cadmium gives red and orange shades, aluminum — green and violet, cobalt — blue,
titanium — white. There's no need to say that heavy metals may cause allergies and some far more serious
diseases, cancer included.
E. Parents may get outraged by their children's desire for tattoos and they've got good reasons to get panicky
— apart from ink related risks, getting tattoos is associated with the risk of infection. Anything from skin
infections to tuberculosis and even AIDS can be transmitted via the instruments. If the tattooist ignores strict
hygienic requirements, like using fresh ink for each session, changing gloves after each stage of tattooing or
disinfecting the furniture, the client may catch a very serious disease.
F. Another reason against permanent tattoos is... their permanent character. You may like it now but people
tend to change their preferences. A safe alternative is a temporary tattoo which lasts for only a few weeks.
Their main advantage is that the skin is not damaged — the tattoo artist just applies henna on it. This type of
tattoos is popular with fashion models who care for their bodies and don't want them to get damaged. G. The actress Amy Taylor says that she got her tattoo when she was sixteen. She thought it was cool, but
several years later the tattoo became a nuisance. Amy wanted to get it removed. She believed that modern
technologies like laser treatment could do it easily but the doctors warned her that the tattoo wouldn't be
fully removed anyway. The treatment is usually long, expensive and rather painful — getting the tattoo is
much easier.

Stonehenge
Stonehenge is Britain’s greatest national icon. Its original purpose is not clear to people, but some scientists have
speculated that it used to be a temple made for the worship of ancient gods. It is called an astronomical observatory for
marking important events on the prehistoric calendar. Others are sure that it used to be a sacred site for the burial of
highranking citizens from the ancient societies.
While we can’t say for sure what it was for, we can say that it wasn’t constructed for any casual purpose. Only
something very important to ancient people would be worth the effort and investment that it took to construct
Stonehenge.
The stones we see today represent Stonehenge in ruin. Many of the original stones have been destroyed or removed
by previous generations for home construction or road repair.
In its day, the construction of Stonehenge was an impressive engineering achievement, requiring a lot of time and
plenty of manual labor. In its first phase, Stonehenge was a large earthwork done approximately 5,000 years ago.
About 2,000 BC, the first stone circle (which is the inner circle now), made of small bluestones, was set up, but
abandoned before completion. The stones used in that first circle must be from the Prescelly Mountains, located 240
miles away. The bluestones weigh up to 4 tons each and about 80 stones were used, in all.
The giant stones which form the outer circle weigh 50 tons each. To transport them from the Marlborough Downs,
20 miles to the north, is a greater problem than moving the bluestones. Most of the way, the transportation is quite
easy, but at the steepest part of the route, at Redhorn Hill, as modern scientists estimate, at least 600 men were needed
just to get each stone past this obstacle.
The question who built Stonehenge is not answered, even today. The monument’s construction has been associated
with many ancient peoples throughout the years, for example with the Druids. This connection was first made around
3 centuries ago by John Aubrey. Julius Caesar and other Roman writers told of Celtic priests during the first conquest
(55 BC). By this time, though, the stones had been there for 2,000 years, and were, perhaps, already in a ruined
condition. Besides, the Druids worshipped in forest temples and did not need any stone structures. The best guess
seems to be that the Stonehenge site was begun by the people of the late Neolithic period (around 3000 BC) and
carried forward by people from a new economy which was arising at this time.
Nowadays the Stonehenge is still a very impressive site, and the closer you get to it the more impressive it is. No
travel itinerary around Britain should omit it.

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest ocean of the world. It covers the northern polar region of the
Earth. The Arctic region is a very cold place. The lowest recorded temperature there is minus 68
degrees. In spite of the cold, a lot of animals live on the Arctic ice. The polar bear is one of them.
Now, due to global warming, the polar bear is in a serious trouble. The thing is that polar bears hunt
seals and they need ice to do this. The bears wait for seals on the ice, hunt them in the water and go
back to the shore. If the ice is too thin, it breaks under the bears’ heavy bodies and they may drown.
The situation is getting worse and some researchers say the ocean may become icefree as soon as
2050.

A. The world’s first university was established in India in 700 BC, where more than 10,500 students from
around the world studied more than 60 different subjects. The training was conducted in Sanskrit. Nowadays
Sanskrit is considered to be the mother of all the European languages. Its elements can be traced in most of
them.
B. The most frequently visited place in India is Delhi, the capital of the country. Itseems to be divided into
two parts. New Delhi is a modern city with hitech architecture, tourist attractions and modern facilities. Old
Delhi is several centuries old, with narrow streets, ancient churches and noisy bazaars. Lots of people live in
slums without the most essential facilities like toilets and running water. C. People all over the world know of India’s greatest river, the Ganges. It is the subject of thousands of
prayers. The river looks extremely beautiful in the morning light. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges
helps to cure all kinds of diseases and can improve your life in general. It has become a common ritual for
pilgrims to gather by the river in the mornings.
D. The most famous and often visited Indian historic area is the Golden Triangle. It consists of the cities of
Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Lying in the southeast, Agra attracts tourists with its iconic image of the Taj Mahal
palace, which is one of the eight wonders of the modern world. To the southwest is the colourful ‘Pink City’
of Jaipur, known for its Palace of Winds.
E. Indian climate differs from one part of the country to another. The air is cool and fresh in the mountains
but in the plains it is usually very hot and dry so even a short trip can be very hard for an inexperienced
traveller. That is why tourists are always glad to have a rest at one of the numerous stations in the hills.
There they can enjoy a nice cup of real Indian tea, the most refreshing drink in such a climate.
F. India is not all history. It is also famous for its Bollywood industry, which produces love stories and
action films. Indian films have always had their own style, rich in music and dancing. Though the industry is
still developing, many of Indian film stars have received Oscar prizes and are known throughout the world.
The home of Bollywood is Bombay, also known as a busy port and the country’s commercial centre.
G. There is an unusual treasure hidden in the Indian mountains. These are striking ancient temples cut in the
rocks. For example, the Buddhist cave temples at Ajanta were built at least 2,000 years ago. Inside the caves
on the walls tourists can see pictures of people’s lives and animal images. Some researchers believe that the
interpretation of the images can help us to learn a lot about people’s lives in ancient times.

Alfred Nobel
The name of the most wellknown Swede of all time — Alfred Nobel — is famous all over the world due to
the prize he established. Despite hundreds of publications about the Nobel Prize, most people know very
little about the man behind it.
Alfred Nobel was born in 1833, in Stockholm, Sweden. When he was four, the family moved to St.
Petersburg, Russia. Alfred studied at home with the best private tutors and quickly mastered chemistry and
became fluent in English, French, German and Russian as well as his native language, Swedish. In Russia,
Alfred attended neither school nor university.
Alfred left Russia at the age of 18 to take a twoyear trip around Europe and to the USA. When he returned
to Russia, he began working at his father's arms factory where he experimented with chemistry and
explosives.
Later, Alfred Nobel expanded the business to Europe and America. He had homes in six countries complete
with laboratories as he was also a workaholic. He said himself that “my home is where I work and I work everywhere”. Alfred Nobel had 93 profitable factories around the world when he died. Many of the leading
industries in the chemical field today like ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) came from companies
established by Nobel. His 355 registered patents1 showed that Alfred Nobel had a wide range of interests in
many fields of technology. There were experiments with imitation leather, artificial rubber and synthetic
silk. Nobel tried to improve the electrical battery, the light bulb and the phonograph. He also took
photographs from the air, using rockets and parachutes. Alfred Nobel was also a big letter writer, sometimes
writing as many as 30 letters a day. It was not only letters that Alfred Nobel wrote. A year before his death,
he published his sad novel “Nemesis” that was performed as a play in Stockholm. Nobel was full of
paradoxes. He was successful yet felt hopeless. He made a fortune out of war but fought for peace. He was a
faithful patriot, yet spent little time in Sweden. He was an outstanding scientist and inventor, yet had only
one year of formal schooling and no university degree. He loved family life but had none of his own. His
dream of a wife and children never came true.
In 1864, a deadly explosion killed his younger brother. Deeply affected, Nobel developed a safer explosive:
dynamite. Soon the newspapers accused Alfred Nobel of being the “salesman of death”, even though 90 %%
of dynamite use was for nonviolent purposes. However, Alfred Nobel himself knew that “there was nothing
that could not be abused”. He never tried to defend his revolutionary invention. But Nobel was disappointed
with how he might be remembered and decided to establish the Nobel Prizes to honour men and women for
outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and for working towards peace. A
prize in economics “in memory of Alfred Nobel” was added in 1969.

Venus is one of the hottest planets in the Solar system. The temperature on its surface is 482 degrees. This
unfriendly place looks much the same as the Earth 4 billion years ago. Both planets were formed from the
same gas cloud but Venus lost most of its water and atmosphere. This happened because the planet turns
very slowly. As a result, now it has no magnetic field to protect it from the Sun's winds. The planet has
turned into a lifeless desert. Most space modules that were sent to Venus, could not work on the planet more
than two hours. The acidic clouds and high pressure quickly made them absolutely useless.

1. Who supports the runners?
2. How it started?
3. How to be sure of the winners?
4. What to wear for a marathon?
5. What it is like to run a marathon?
6. How to get ready for a marathon?
7. Who runs just for fun?
8. Can the landscape help?
A. Many cities in the United States hold marathons. The city of Chicago, Illinois, has its marathon once a
year. The running area in Chicago is almost absolutely flat. The scenery is amazingly beautiful. This fact has
helped some runners set some of the world’s fastest times there. Many of them hope to go back again.
B. Some people know that they have no chance of winning but they participate anyway. They are not
officially registered for the race — they just start running with the crowd. These runners are called “bandits.”
Many of them finish the race hours after the serious runners but they are happy to cross the finish line
anyway.
C. An important battle took place in Marathon in Greece more than two thousand years ago. Greece’s army
won the battle. A Greek runner was sent to Athens to announce the victory. The man ran for about 40 km at
top speed. He announced his message. Then he fell to the ground and died. In memory of the great runner a
marathon was included in the Olympic Games.
D. Recently, a British writer and journalist, Mario Roter, ran in a marathon. He thought it would be fun to
write an article about what people felt during the race. Later he said that running fortytwo kilometers was
no fun. Many people agree that there is no pleasure in running a marathon, but afterwards it feels great to
know that you have done it.
E. People usually start training for a marathon in early spring. They run often and gradually increase the
length of their runs from eight to twelve and even to twenty kilometers. At this point it is necessary to build
up the needed strength. In the months before the race, the average participant runs a total of more than eight
hundred kilometers.
F. Usually there are lots of runners. The line of people stretches back hundreds of meters. As the winners are
awarded prize money it is important to avoid cheating. In order to track all the participants, special chips are
used. When the participants register for the marathon, they get their identification number and computer
chips. The chips are activated at the start of the race and keep time.
G. A marathon is usually a big public event. In the city where the marathon is held hundreds of people give
their time and effort to make the race possible. The city police block traffic on the main roads. Some runners
thank the officers as they run by. Every few kilometers there are volunteers who offer water to the runners.
Lots of people cheer.

The Dolphins Team
The Dolphins is a relatively new beach service that has been in operation for three years so far, and we are
growing fast. The tourist business in the region is booming. More and more people are coming to the
Southern Beach every year and our services are in great demand.
We provide a variety of services to the beachgoers. We lend them beach equipment like parasols and beach
chairs, we arrange boat tours, snorkelling and diving expeditions. However, first, and foremost, The
Dolphins help swimmers who are in danger. We've got a highly professional rescue team. Last year we were
awarded first prize in the national lifeguard competition in which the best teams of the country took part.
Being a lifeguard is a job, not entertainment as some people may think. Anyone who wants to join us has to
remember that the duty of a lifeguard is not only to be on watch and save careless holidaymakers but to
prevent any dangerous situation for them.
Not only excellent physical condition but strong personal skills are necessary as beachgoers are not always
very cooperative. Everyone knows that lifeguards fly flags of different colours: the green one indicates that
the sea is calm and there's no danger for swimmers; the yellow flag means that the weather conditions are
not very good — swimmers should be very careful and not go too deep. The red flag indicates that the
situation is potentially dangerous and swimming is prohibited. It doesn't necessarily mean a storm, it could
be a strong current, water pollution, the danger of marine animals attacking or something else.
Unfortunately, some people ignore it and go into the water anyway. The beach patrol are not the police —
we cant arrest people for disobedience. All we can do is educate people and get them to behave in a civilized
way.
This is actually the main reason why we decided to set up our Summer Lifeguard School — we want to
make the beach a safer and more civilized place. The school is for children from ten to seventeen who want
to spend summer on the beach and learn some lifeguard skills. Anyone who meets the age requirement is
admitted. Our instructors will teach them the basic skills of water safety and basic emergency procedures,
the language of semaphore (that is how to use flags to transmit a message), how to avoid sunstroke and how
to swim in the waves of the sea. Our openair classes will be useful to everyone. Reckless divers and
swimmers will understand that no one, no matter how sporty they are, can be absolutely free of risk in the
sea. Those who are afraid to step into the water will learn to control their fear and will learn to swim (under
the very close supervision of our instructors).
On completing the summer course, the children will be awarded our Summer Lifeguard School Certificate
and we hope some of them will join The Dolphins in the future. To do so, they will have to wait until they
turn 18 and gain the Professional Lifeguard Certificate.

The ninth planet of the solar system was discovered not long ago. It happened in 1930. Scientists had been
hunting for the planet for a long time. They had calculated its probable position but there was no proof that
the planet really existed. It was too far away for the telescopes of that time to find it. It’s worth mentioning
that the first photos of the planet were taken by a very young researcher. He was only twentyfour and had
no formal education in astronomy. However, he was deeply involved in the search for the ninth planet. The
planet at the edge of the solar system was called Pluto, after the Roman god. The name for the planet was
suggested by an 11yearold British girl.

A. Cheltenham started as a small market town that later became one of the most fashionable health resorts in
Britain. Once, in 1716 people noticed pigeons eating crystals in a meadow outside the town. These were
crystals of salt which helped King George III and the members of the royal family treat their illnesses. Since
then, pigeons have been a symbol of Cheltenham Spa.
B. Cheltenham is a small, ancient town in England situated to the northwest of Oxford. It lies below the
highest point of the Cotswold Hills and above the level of the River Severn. The town is also called «The
Western Gateway». Thanks to its position it has become a popular tourist attraction.
C. The Pittville Pump Room is the largest of the spa constructions in Cheltenham. It is a magnificent, old
house of classical style made of white stone. The Pump Room was designed for balls and entertainments
and, of course, for taking the medicinal waters. Today, it is still used as a concert hall at festival time and for
weddings, and of course, visitors can still take the waters – if they so wish!
D. Tourism is highly developed in Cheltenham and the City Council has to reduce the negative impact of
tourists on the town. A lot has been done. The town has developed walking, cycling and public transport routes as an alternative to cars. There is a pool of bicycles that tourists can use for short distance journeys.
The local services try to recycle all the packaging, plastic bottles and batteries left by tourists.
E. Many famous people of the past have connections with Cheltenham. Gustav Holst, a wellknown English
composer of the 19th century, was born in the town. His house is now his birthplace museum. Visitors may
learn a lot about Holst's life, his music and his family. The famous Antarctic explorer Edward Wilson was
also born in Cheltenham. Now a statue of him stands in the Long Gardens.
F. The beauty and wonderful sights of Cheltenham continue to attract visitors from countries all over the
world. For many years people have enjoyed the beauty of Cheltenham's parks, open spaces and the general
greenery of the town. Cheltenham has been described as ‘a town within a park’. Montpellier place, which is
famous for its wonderful flowers, lies in the centre of the town.
G. Thousands of visitors come to Cheltenham to take part in the festivals which are held in the town every
year. The town organises literature, music, jazz and science festivals, attracting names with a national and
international reputation from each field. Besides all this, for a week in March the town becomes the centre of
the National Gold Cup in horse racing.

The history of the Wooden Toy Museum begins with the trade fair that took place in our town more
than three hundred years ago. It was an important event — peasants, craftsmen, and merchants came here to
sell and buy goods and to make arrangements for further cooperation. There was timber and iron, grain and
flour, meat and honey, cows, hens and ducks for sale and barter. As the town was famous for its toy making
tradition the local craftsmen took advantage of the event too and demonstrated their crafts to visitors from
neighbouring towns and villages. Hundreds of carved wooden dolls, birds, animals, clowns and other toys
were displayed on large stalls. Some of them were painted and some were not but they looked attractive
either way.
A rich merchant happened to visit the fair. He was accompanied by his family. To keep the children
occupied while the father was busy on business, he let them go to see the toys and promised to buy one toy
for each of the four children. It was a hard choice for the children to make — there were plenty of toys. How
could they find the best one? The youngest daughter, who was only four, didn't hesitate. She was determined
to get the wonderful dolls' house she saw on one of the stalls. It was a real wonder — the door and the
windows were decorated with wooden fretwork, the house had a porch and a chimney, and there was
furniture inside! The little girl couldn't take her eyes off it and desperately looked forward to the moment
when her father finished his business and bought it for her. The business however kept the man busy till very
late at night and when he came, the children had been put to bed. They were promised that their father would
buy the toys the next morning but he never did.
The weather turned windy that night. The dry wind picked up the sparks from the cooking fires and
in seconds the whole fair was on fire. Everyone rushed to rescue their goods, but the wooden toys had no
chance of surviving. When the little daughter of the merchant found out that the fantastic doll house had been burnt, she kept very
quiet and was unhappy for several days. It felt to her as if a real house had been destroyed. The merchant
loved his daughter very much and to console her he promised to make a real house exactly like the lost one.
The house would be full of different toys which the local craftsmen would exhibit there not only during the
fair but all year round.
And such a house was built. It's certainly not the building that houses the toy collections now — the
original construction was destroyed long ago and several new versions have been constructed at the same
location since then. Now its a fairly large brick house, much more fireresistant than its predecessors.
To tell the truth, there's no solid evidence that the story about the merchant's daughter is real.
Historians say that it's no more than a legend but the locals insist it is true. Who is right and who is wrong? It
doesn't matter much as long as the Wooden Toy Museum exists and gives joy to children and grownup
visitors.

Nowadays solar energy is widely used as an alternative form of power. Solar panels transform the energy
from the sun into electricity. The first plane that does not need fuel was constructed in France, in 2015. It
uses only the sun's energy. The panels are placed on the huge wings of the plane. It doesn’t fly very fast.
Solar energy can make the plane move at only 140 miles an hour. However, the plane is able to travel round
the world. It is safe and can successfully cross areas of bad weather. In the future, engineers hope to
construct a model that people can fly in. Our dream of environmentally friendly transport may come true

A. The population of London grew in the 17th century. Many houses were built during that period. It was
needed after the Great Fire of 1666. In the 19th century the city suffered from pollution and epidemics. The
German bombings during World War II destroyed the historical center of London. After the war the city was
reconstructed and now it is one of the most beautiful European capitals.
B. Each year in December, the people of Norway send a present to Londoners. It is a very big Christmas
Tree, which is put in Trafalgar Square. In this way they thank Britain for help during World War II. This tree
becomes one of the unforgettable sights of London, especially when it is lit by hundreds of fairy lights.
Londoners often group around the tree and sing Christmas songs.
C. Trafalgar Square is situated in central London. It is one of the greatest and most famous tourist
attractions. Your visit to the capital usually begins with this place. It's absolutely necessary for every tourist
to see Nelson's Column. Everyone should admire the lovely fountains of the square. Also, you can't say that
you've been to London if you don't take a picture of yourself in the square.
D. London was founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD and called Londinium. There is a common
theory that the word "Londinium" comes from the name of a Celtic village. Also, the adjective "lond" meant
"wild" in the Celtic language. Perhaps, it characterized the river Thames, on which the city was started. So,
most scientists think that London is a "village on the wild river".
E. In spite of being an important industrial and business centre London is known for its parks and open
spaces. In every part of the city, you can find at least one park. It can be just a small pool with surrounding
trees or a big and magnificent park like Hyde Park or Regent's Park. They are all loved and visited by
Londoners all the year round.
F. The liveliest part of London is West End. There are a lot of pubs, clubs, shops, theatres and cafes there.
All kinds of pastimes are offered to tourists. Most of them choose shopping in Oxford Street with its stores,
boutiques and gift shops. It's a pleasant experience because the choices are great.
G. Big Ben is one of London's bestknown sights. The name "Big Ben" actually refers not to the clocktower
itself, but to the thirteen ton bell hanging within. The tower is not open to the general public. A tourist from
abroad can't visit it. The citizens of the UK are luckier. They can write a letter to a member of Parliament
and ask to allow them to tour the clock tower. Usually, the permission is given.

Running the Thames
Three friends Alan, Tom and Martin decided to run 184 miles along the most famous British river–
from the beginning of the Thames down to its mouth, where the river runs into the sea.
Their preparations for the marathon didn’t take long and they set out. It was not easy to find the place
marked on the map as the official source of the river Thames. In reality, it was an old stone under a big tree.
Surprisingly, there was practically no water at the source, just a small pit. However, at the end of the first
day, they came to a narrow stream running under a wooden bridge.
The runners were lucky with the weather; it was cool and bright for the whole week. Soft winds blew
and the sun shone. In spite of the weather, the start of the marathon was not very promising. On the first day,
Martin accidentally fell over a tree root and hurt his foot. In addition to that, Alan said he had damaged his
rucksack during their preparation. However, the friends went on running.
They passed lovely houses and some wonderful nature. The Thames had grown from a small river
into a strong stream. Hypnotised by the view of the river, Tom missed the path and fell into the mud. Cold
and angry, he was a real trouble the first day. In the evening, the runners reached the point where the river
became possible to navigate. The friends were so tired that they stopped at a cheap hotel for food, drink and
sleep.
The second day they ran along arched stone bridges and through fortyfive river locks1, each one
having its own history. The runners stopped at the first lock to take a photo by the 19th century statue of Old
Father Thames. The other locks and the bridges, dating from the 13th century, could have told much about
British royal families, writers and inventors, battles and victories. So the runners spent the second day
exploring the locks and the old bridges and taking photos.
The next few days Alan, Tom and Martin ran through quiet and peaceful places in Oxfordshire. The
calm river occupied all their thoughts and they left their troubles behind them. They spent nights at small
BedandBreakfasts with unusual foreign guests who were discovering the old British towns, castles and
churches.
Closer to London the Thames changed its character. It became wide and busy with numerous boats
and ships. The banks were full of grand houses with green lawns, street markets and modern walkways.
On the seventh day the runners followed the river as it cut the capital in two. The friends made their way
past famous London sights such as The Tower, The London Eye and Greenwich.
Finally the friends got to The Thames Barrier, where the river ran into the sea. The marathon was
over.

We are always told that we should clean our teeth regularly to keep them healthy and to have fresh breath. It
is believed that people started using a kind of paste to clean their teeth around 5000 years ago. However, the
ingredients of these tooth powders were very different from ours. For example, the people of ancient Egypt
used salt, mint, dried flowers and pepper to create tooth powder. Later, in the 18th century, in some countries

A. When you think of the Irish, you often picture a redhaired person dressed all in green. However, it's just
a popular myth which has grown into a tradition, particularly in the United States. It's customary in Ireland
to wear green clothes only on St. Patrick's Day. Lots of people are tricked by this clichй. However,
originally, the colour associated with Saint Patrick was not green, but blue.
B. In Ireland, the colour green was long considered to bring bad fortune. The reason is that in Irish folklore
green is the favourite color of the Good People (the proper name for fairies). Myths run that they are likely
to steal people, especially children, who wear too much of the colour. In the past, a girl would never wear
anything green on her wedding day.
C. Christmas is a very important celebration in Ireland. After dinner on Christmas Eve, it is common for
families to leave milk and bread on the table as a sign of friendliness and kindness. Another custom is to
leave the door unlocked. A lit candle is left in a window during the night. It represents help for any traveller
who is passing by. D. Potatoes form the basis for many traditional Irish dishes. They are eaten boiled, mashed, fried, baked, you
name it. Potatoes are mixed with cabbage or green onions to make traditional Irish dishes. They are also
made into potato cakes and used in soups or stews. It’s common to find potatoes cooked in two different
ways on the same dinner plate.
E. The shamrock is still a popular sign of good fortune in Ireland. It is believed that anyone who possesses
one will be blessed with fortune in everything, even in gambling, and will be saved from the evil of witches.
There are certain conditions to be met so that its power remains effective: the owner of the shamrock must
keep it away from the public eye and never give it to anyone else.
F. The name Gulliver is known to everyone due to the book or the film about the fantastic trip of the English
doctor. However, not all of us remember the name of the author — Jonathan Swift, an Irish writer, who was
born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1667. In his book Gulliver’s Travels a man went to an island where strange tiny
people lived. His life there was full of adventures and dangers, he met there friends and enemies.
G. Ireland is known as the native land of limericks — short humorous poems that have five lines. They make
people laugh and are easy to remember! Lots of poets and writers were fond of limericks. The word
“limerick” probably comes from the Irish town of Limerick. The short poem has made the town known all
over the world.

Hilary Smith belonged to a good family, and his father never failed to let people know this fact. Old Mr.
Smith was a man whose ideas and behavior belonged to the traditions of nineteenth century gentlemen.
Unfortunately, Hilary himself had some trouble with the bank about a few cheques. It seemed a very
unimportant matter to the young man, but not to his father. Hilary was sent off to Australia immediately. Mr.
Smith knew little about that place, but he understood one thing. It was a convenient country for people who
did not like the customs of old England.
Hilary did not like Australia, and Australia did not like Hilary, so he took the earliest opportunity of
returning to England. He could not, of course, earn enough money to buy a ticket, so he had to wait until his
father and his brother died. Fortunately they did this at the same time. After that he received all the money
which belonged to the good old family.
There was not a large amount of money, and Hilary soon spent it. When all the money had been spent,
Hilary could do one of two things. He could die or work. The thought of neither of these have him any
pleasure. Then he remembered that he was not alone in the world. He had an aunt.
She was his father's only sister, and he knew little about her. His father’s oldfashioned ideas were
responsible for this unfortunate fact. When she was spoken about, he always looked displeased. "Your aunt
Mary behaved very badly. The family name suffered as a result," he said. It seemed that she had failed to
marry a lord. Instead she had chosen a husband who had a small business. Families like the Smiths were too
good for that sort of thing, of course. As soon as she became "Mrs. Prothero", she was dead to her brother.
Later, her husband died and left her a lot of money, but that did not bring her back to life in her brother's
opinion. Hilary discovered his aunt’s address by talking to the family lawyer. Fortunately, she had continued to
use him after the family turned its back on her. So Hilary’s sun shone again, and the old lady seemed to like
him. He made frequent visits to his aunt's house; and soon he was living comfortably in the building for
which the shopkeeper's money had paid.

Do you know why it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter? Most people believe that it is because the
Earth is closer to the Sun in the summer and farther from it in the winter. But it is not like this at all! In fact,
the distance between the Earth and the Sun is largest in July and smallest in January! Scientists suggest that
the reason for different summer and winter temperatures is the angle of the Sun’s rays. In the summer, the
rays reach the Earth almost at a right angle. Due to this, the rays are not spread out and a smaller area of the
planet's surface gets the energy. In the winter, the angle changes and the Sun’s rays are spread out over a
larger area. Besides this, the long nights and short days do not give enough time for the land to warm up.

the following ten years graffiti grew more and more popular and was soon joined by new forms of street art
including street installations, street sculptures and 3D pavement illusions.
C. Street artists are often associated with opposition. Their artwork is considered a crime and vandalism and
the artists may be arrested for damaging property so the artists prefer to use nicknames and create their
drawings mostly at night. They are not looking for fame, especially in countries where graffiti is still illegal.
D. Kurt Wenner was the one who developed an absolutely new form of street art. That is 3D pavement art.
He started his career as a graphic artist but after moving to Italy he worked on a new technique. Wenner
attracted the attention of the entire world with his remarkable 3D artwork and he also inspired a future
generation of 3D pavement street artists.
E. Banksy is probably the most famous English street artist who has already become a legendary figure. It’s
still true that no one knows who the person really is. However, his works are exhibited in galleries across the
world. An American magazine even named him among the top most influential people in the world.
However, he was the only one whose photo the magazine could not publish.
F. The motivations and ideas that inspire street artists are as different as the artists themselves. Some street
artists, by creating certain works, want to draw attention to social and political problems. For other artists,
street art is just a form of selfexpression. And there are those who enjoy the challenge and risks which are
connected with working illegally in some city areas.
G. Traditional graffiti has recently been used as a successful method for advertising. Lots of companies
agree that traditional advertising on city streets is too boring and common so many people simply ignore it.
However, graffiti adverts catch your attention, creating a memorable image. Big companies find this quite
useful and try to include more elements of graffiti in their advertising campaigns.

King Alfred and the Cake
Many years ago there lived in England a wise and good king whose name was Alfred. No other man
ever did so much for his country as he; and people now, all over the world, speak of him as Alfred the Great,
a great commanderinchief, a great ruler and a great scholar.
In those days a king did not have a very easy life. There was war almost all the time, and no one else
could lead his army into battle so well as he. And so, between ruling and fighting, he had a busy time of it
indeed.
A fierce, rude people, called the Danes, had come from over the sea, and were fighting the English.
There were so many of them, and they were so bold and strong, that for a long time they gained every battle.
If they kept on, they would soon be the masters of the whole country.
At last, after a great battle, the English army was broken up and scattered. Every man had to save
himself in the best way he could. King Alfred fled alone, in great haste, through the woods and swamps.
Late in the day the king came to the hut of a woodcutter. He was very tired and hungry, and he begged
the woodcutter's wife to give him something to eat and a place to sleep in her hut.
The woman was baking some cakes upon the hearth, and she looked with pity upon the poor, ragged
fellow who seemed so hungry. She had no thought that he was the king.
"Yes," she said, "I will give you some supper if you will watch these cakes. I want to go out and milk the
cow; and you must see that they do not burn while I am gone."
King Alfred was very willing to watch the cakes, but he had far greater things to think about. How was
he going to get his army together again? And how was he going to drive the fierce Danes out of the land? He
forgot his hunger; he forgot the cakes; he forgot that he was in the woodcutter's hut. His mind was busy
making plans for tomorrow.
In a little while the woman came back. The cakes were smoking on the hearth. They were burned to a
crisp. Ah, how angry she was!
"You lazy fellow!" she cried. "See what you have done! You want something to eat, but you do not want
to work!"
I have been told that she even struck the king with a stick; but I can hardly believe that she was so ill
natured.
The king must have laughed to himself at the thought of being scolded in this way; and he was so hungry
that he did not mind the woman's angry words half so much as the loss of the cakes.
I do not know whether he had anything to eat that night, or whether he had to go to bed without his
supper. But it was not many days until he had gathered his men together again, and had beaten the Danes in
a great battle.
A7 Alfred was a man of many talents.
A8 His warriors were tired and hungry.
A9 It was hardly possible to rule happily in those days.
A10 The enemies had come from Wales.
A11 The woodcutter's wife recognised the king at once.
A12 The woman had to milk the goats.
A13 Alfred wanted to learn baking.
A14 King Alfred finally defeated his enemy.

People have always wanted to discover new things and new worlds. We have built spaceships to go to other
planets and are planning to visit other galaxies one day. Meanwhile, we know very little about our own
planet. The oceans, which cover 70 percent of the planet, are an unknown world to us. The Pacific Ocean is
the largest one. The lowest point on the Earth is also there. It is called Challenger Deep and it was
discovered in 1875. The Pacific Ocean stretches from the Arctic Ocean to the coast of Antarctica, but most
of its water is in the warm tropics, which makes it warm. A lot of fish and animals live in the Pacific Ocean.
The place is still waiting for researchers to discover its secrets for us.

2. Rapid progress and a brilliant career
3. A hard start
4. The special guest
5. His favourite dishes
6. Innovations in management
7. A man of many talents
8. Masterpieces in the kitchen
A. An old man entered the restaurant. He looked very much like other people dining there — an elegant suit
and noble manners. He could have been a banker or a businessman or even a senator. However, a brief
whisper among the waiters indicated that this guest was even more special than the others. It was a great
honour to have the greyhaired visitor who was called the king of chefs and the chef of kings.
B. The man was Auguste Escoffier. He spent his early years in a small village not far from Nice, went to
school and dreamt about becoming a sculptor — he was very good at painting and making wooden and iron
figures. However, his father thought that it wouldn't earn his son a living and at the age of thirteen Auguste
was told that he would become a cook. The boy left home to take up an apprenticeship with his uncle, who
owned a restaurant in Nice.
C. Auguste didn't mind his father's decision very much — he liked helping his grandmother in the kitchen.
However, the restaurant kitchen was very different from his grandmother's. It was a small room, unbearably
hot and stuffy. Lots of dishes were being fried, boiled or stewed at the same time. The people were sweating
and swearing and the standards of hygiene were very low, if there were any at all. The cooks were rude to
their assistants and punished them for any mistakes.
D. Escoffier, however, didn't give up and he was quickly rewarded for his hard Work. At the age of nineteen
he was offered a job in a highly reputable Parisian restaurant. At the time of FrankoPrussian War Escoffier
served in the army as a Chef and managed to prepare delicious dishes from very basic ingredients. When
Escoffier returned to civil life, he became really famous and worked in the most fashionable restaurants of
Paris, London and Monte Carlo.
E. Escoffier was in the culinary profession for more than sixty years. He wrote several culinary books that
are still popular with chefs. In the books one can find detailed instructions on how to make a piece of art in
the kitchen. He created lots of new salads, meat and fish dishes, sauces and desserts. One of Escoffier's most
famous desserts is probably Peach Melba, a dish that he created specially for the opera singer Nellie Melba,
who dined in his restaurant. F. Escoffier made French Cuisine famous worldwide. Apart from creating new dishes he changed cooking
techniques, the order of serving dishes and kitchen organization. Escoffier introduced the brigade system —
each member was responsible for particular operations and the chef supervised the whole process. Escoffier's
kitchens were spotlessly clean, his staff were efficient and polite, swearing and drinking was absolutely
prohibited. He turned cooking into art.
G. As with any outstanding person, Auguste Escoffier was gifted in many other ways. The famous Sarah
Bernhardt liked his paintings and reproached him for burying the talent of an artist. Cesar Ritz, the founder
of the Hotel Ritz in Paris and London, highly valued Escoffier as a businessman. They had worked together
in BadenBaden, Paris, London and Monte Carlo.

Christmas Tree Memories
F
G
My name is Ted. I grew up in the 50s but my childhood memories are still alive. The most pleasant of them
is the family Christmas tree. Besides my mum and dad, there were five children in the family. We all took
part in decorating the Christmas tree, one way or another. It was a special time for me as dad took us for a
trip to the winter forest.
The experience was special as only boys were allowed to go to the countryside to pick out the tree. At the
age of five I felt proud to be in a man’s adventure. I remember walking through the forest with dad looking
for the perfect, large tree. We had a tall ceiling in the living room, so a small tree did not look right there.
At the age of five, even a small tree seemed great to me. To measure a tree I raised my hands above my head
and looked up. If I could reach the top of the tree I thought it was big enough. Dad, however, always chose
the perfect tree very carefully.
Once he had made his choice, he took out an axe to cut down the tree. I wanted to help my dad and brothers,
but they always told me to stand back. When the cutting began, I tried to hold the tree up. I was afraid the
tree would fall on them and I felt strong enough to hold it.
After the tree was down we took it to the car and went back home. I don’t remember how we got that large
tree through the door, but it was always right. Then dad got the tree to stand up and we could start the
decorating. The tree, the boxes with decorations and a tall ladder took up the whole room.
All the family took part as mum gave everyone a task. I had to pass the decorations. What I liked best about
the Christmas tree were the lights. When everybody else had left I stayed in the room and watched the lights
travelling up and down the Christmas tree.
Dad had one more special job that day. Mum took her favourite ornament, a lighted angel, which she had got
as a present from her family. Dad climbed up the ladder and fixed the angel at the top of the Christmas tree.
When I looked at the angel, I thought Santa was close to my house.
Everyone, and the decorated shining tree, was ready to celebrate Christmas. It was so big that it nearly
touched the ceiling. I felt I was a small part of a big adventure. The last few years we lived in that house the
trips to the forest with dad ceased. We bought an artificial tree instead.

Without the energy from the Sun, the Earth would have no life at all. Nowadays everyone knows that the
Sun is a star. Like all stars, the Sun is a great burning ball of gases. To us, it seems large and red. The other
stars look white or light blue because they are much farther from us than the Sun. In the past, many people
believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe. They thought that the Sun and the stars went round it.

1. The symbols of London
2. Means of travelling
3. World record holder
4. A sweet in the street
5. On the road
6. A healthy but difficult choice
7. An unusual hobby
8. Conflict over roads
A. The British are enthusiastic about mobility. They think that the ability to travel far and frequently is their
right. People can spend up to two or three hours commuting to London or another big city and arrive back at their homes in the countryside only late in the evening. They put up with the long journey because they want
their families to avoid the unhealthy lifestyle of big cities.
B. Most journeys to work are made by private road transport. It leads to the pollution so familiar to many big
cities, and to traffic jams. Congestion is especially high in Britain because the British do not welcome the
idea of building new roads. They don’t like living close to them. Each proposal to build a new road is
criticised so it’s not easy to improve the road situation.
C. Perhaps because the trains were the first means of transport in Britain many people still have a romantic
outlook on them. Thousands of trainlovers spend a lot of time looking for information about trains,
especially old steam engines. Many enthusiasts spend their free time restoring and repairing old trains. They
even earn some money by offering rides to tourists.
D. It is possible to travel between any two towns or cities by either road or rail. In some parts of the country
there is a very good rail network but most commercially successful trains run between London and the
largest cities in the country. By modern European standards British trains are not fast. Coach services are
generally even slower than trains but are much cheaper. It explains why they are still in use.
E. Britain is one of the few countries in Europe where doubledecker buses are a common sight. Although
singledeckers have been in use since 1960s, London still has many doubledeckers in operation. They are
worldfamous, an image associated with the city. Another London icon is the black taxi. Normally, these
traditional taxis cannot be hired by phone. You simply have to find one on the street.
F. In 1953, most schoolchildren walked to school. For this reason, school crossing patrols were introduced.
This ‘patrol’ consists of an adult wearing a bright waterproof coat and carrying a stick with a circle on top of
it, which reads ‘STOP’. Armed with this ‘lollipop’, the adult walks out into the middle of the road, stops the
traffic and allows the children to cross.
G. On 9 January 2013, the London Underground (or the Tube) celebrated 150 years since the first
underground journey. It is both the world's oldest underground railway and the oldest rapid transit system. It
was also the first underground railway to operate electric trains. The Underground has 268 stations and 400
km of track, making it the longest metro system in the world by route length.

The koala is a small bearlike animal that looks like a soft toy. The animal is cute and nonaggressive, but
it’s difficult to see a koala in the Zoo and no one ever keeps them as pets. Why is it so?
The main reason why people shouldn’t try to take koalas out from their natural home is their diet. It’s a strict
diet of eucalyptus leaves as koalas practically never eat anything else. In Australia there are over 600 types
of eucalyptus, but koalas eat only 40–50 varieties with only about 10 being preferred. And even if you find
the koala’s most favourite tree and plant it in your backyard, you won’t be able to supply your koalapet with
food anyway. The thing is that koalas eat only fresh young leaves, and the tree has few of them. So, to keep
a koala happy and healthy, you would have to plant about 100 eucalyptus trees!
It’s difficult to explain why koalas love eucalyptus leaves so much. The leaves are tough and feel like
rubber. They have very few calories and they are poisonous to most animals. Koalas, however, cope with
such a diet easily. Nature has equipped them with specialised adaptations. Each koala eats approximately
200 to 500 grams of leaves per day. They are very slow eaters and they manage to get the maximum amount meaning
"no
word
Aboriginal
of energy from such a small amount of food. They also sleep for up to 18 hours per day in order to conserve
energy.
Koalas spend all their lives on eucalyptus trees and they don’t have any need to leave them. Normally the
animals don’t drink water as they receive it from the leaves. For this reason the koala got its name from an
ancient
drink".
Koalas live in societies, just like humans, so they need to be able to come into contact with other koalas.
They live in suitable eucalyptus forests which are large enough to support a healthy koala population and to
allow for expansion by maturing young koalas. In spite of their peaceful and sleepy look, koalas are highly
territorial animals and don’t allow strangers to approach their “home trees” and “food trees”.
A female koala gives birth to only one baby in one or two years. It's hairless, blind and very little – about 2
kms long! It gets into the mother's pouch – a special pocket of skin on the stomach – and stays there for six
or seven months. Then it gets out of the pouch but stays with the mother until it's about one year old. Koalas
are slowbreeding animals and their population can't grow fast. The animals were in danger of extinction at
the beginning of the 20th century when the koala was hunted for its fur. Fortunately, the population has been
restored and today the Australian government doesn't consider the koala as endangered.

You have 30 minutes to do this task.
You have received a letter from your Englishspeaking pen friend, Alice.
...One of my friends gets ill very often. The doctor says that it's because he lives in a big city with a poor
environment...
What ecological problems are the most serious in your country? What can teenagers do to make their
hometown cleaner? Would you like to live in a big city or in the country, why?
Write her a letter and answer her 3 questions. Write 100–120 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.
Speaking
C2 You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be
ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.
The carrot is a root vegetable which consists mostly of water and sugar. The carrots that we eat today
originated from the wild ones which grew in Europe and Asia. The vegetable tasted sweet and the people
began to use it as food.
There are two main types of carrots. There are eastern carrots that have dark purple roots and western carrots
with orange roots. In fact, orange carrots first appeared in Europe in 1721. Dutch farmers selected orange
carrots because orange is the colour of the Dutch Royal Family. Now orange carrots are widely grown all
over the world. In modern households carrots are cooked and eaten in different ways. The vegetable is
boiled, fried, baked and eaten raw. People also make juice from it.
C3 You are going to give a talk about weather and seasons. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and
speak for not more than 2 minutes (1012 sentences).
Remember to say:
which of the four seasons you like most, and why
how the Earth’s climate has changed recently whether you trust the weather forecast, and why
You have to talk continuously.
