We’re going to London!

Focus on:

Level – Elementary / Pre-intermediate

Reading skills – finding relevant info, categorizing info

Genre analysis – guidebook, contents pages

Vocabulary – collocations related to traveling / vacations

The activities below can be used independently, or to supplement any coursebook that introduces the topic of travelling / London / going on vacation.

Task 1

1                    Introduce the topic – Travelling / London / Going on vacation

2                    With stronger class, brainstorm things you do

       before a vacation

       when you are on vacation

       after a vacation

and write them on the board under the appropriate headings.

With weaker class, hand out gapped phrases (see Task 1) and ask them to complete the gaps and then decide whether you do them before, after or while you’re on vacation.

Task 2

3                      Ask Ss:

how often they do things from Task 1

which of these things they enjoy / hate doing

Patterns to focus on:

Present Simple positive / negative + adverbs of frequency

       I enjoy / like / love / don’t mind / hate + ing

4                    Ask Ss to think of connections b/w the activities discussed in Task 1. There are no right or wrong answers as long as the Ss can justify their answers.

5                    Focus Ss on the idea of doing some research. Questions to discuss:

Why would you do research before you go?

What kind of information would you look for?

anglofeel.ru

Where would you look for this information?

Why do some people prefer to do research online? Why do others prefer guidebooks?

Task 3

6                    Show Ss the guidebook cover. Ask Ss what kind of information they expect to find in this guidebook.

7                    Hand out the contents pages and ask Ss to study them. Discuss how the book is organized, what sections / subsections there are. Discuss what kind of information each section / subsection might contain.

Task 4

8                    Ask Ss to match the information and the sections / subsections where they can possibly find it. Encourage them not to worry about new vocabulary.

9                    Check answers, providing explanation / clarification, if necessary.

10                With stronger class, elicit questions your Ss might have about visiting London, write them on the board.

With weaker class, go straight to Task 5.

Task 5

11                  Ask Ss to complete the questions with suitable verbs. Check answers.

12                  Ask Ss to decide which section / subsection of the book is likely to provide answers.

13                  Ask Ss to tick the questions they might want to ask.

Homework

Ask Ss to find answers to the questions you wrote on the board in Step 10 and those they ticked in Step 13 using the guidebook (make sure they have it)

Additionally, you might want to ask Ss to plan a short trip to London using the guidebook.
