1976 Democratic Party presidential primaries
The 1976 Democratic presidential primaries were the selection process by which voters of the Democratic Party chose its nominee for President of the United States in the 1976 U.S. presidential election. Former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter was selected as the nominee through a series of primary elections and caucuses culminating in the
1976 Democratic National Convention held from July 12 to July 15, 1976, in New York City. This is the earliest Democratic Convention where the nominee is still alive as of 2019.

Incumbent President Gerald Ford was selected as the nominee through a series of primary elections and caucuses culminating in the 1976 Republican National Convention held from August 16 to August 19, 1976, in Kansas City, Missouri. The 1976 election marks the first time that Republican primaries or caucuses were held in every state; the
Democrats had previously done so in 1972. This also marks the last election in which the Republican nominee was undetermined at the start of the party's National Convention. Ford faced a strong challenge from former governor Ronald Reagan of California, and both candidates entered the convention needing to woo the remaining uncommitted delegates to secure the nomination.
