When do people perform this song? Let’s translate it.
(We wish you a merry Christmas — популярный светский рождественский гимн.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
I like the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar cards play
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men
CHRISTMAS DAYS
Christmas days are white with snow,
The winds are laughing as they blow.
Across the ponds and lakes we glide,
And over the drifting snow we ride
And down the hills we gaily slide
And shout with all our might:
“Merry Christmas!”

1 What kind of holiday is Christmas?
Christmas is a great religious holiday. It has its history. Mary and Joseph were Christ's parents.
They went to Bethlehem. Their way was dangerous and very long. It was getting darker and
darker. They didn't know where to go. A lot of bright stars appeared in the sky. Suddenly
Mary saw a cave. At last they found a place where Mary gave a birth to her child. He was a
boy. Many bright stars appeared in the sky when Christ was born. But among them was the
biggest and the brightest star that showed the way to his place of birth. A lot of people came to
see him. They brought many presents.
2 . When do the British people celebrate Christmas?
(December 25)
3. What country gives the Christmas tree to the Londoners every year? ( The spruce
Christmas tree is a thankyou gift to the people of London from the people of Oslo for British
assistance in defeating Germany in WWII. The tradition began in 1947. The plaque reads:
This tree is given by the city of Oslo as a token of Norwegian gratitude to the people of
London for their assistance during the years 194045.
4. Where does the Christmas tree stand in London? (Trafalgar Square)

believed to be the first to use the Christmas tree in their celebrations, and Martin Luther was
the first to place a star on the top of the tree. This star represent the star that appeared over the
stable in which Christ was born. In Great Britain the Christmas tree became popular when
Queen Victoria used it. Besides the Christmas tree, holly and mistletoe are used to decorate the
house.)
6. Are there many skating rinks in London? (A lot of)
7. Why do groups of singers perform Christmas carols in the streets and squares? (Carol
singing is an essential part of Christmas. No church or school is without its carol service.
Carols may be traditional or by known composers they can express different feelings. Carols
appeared in Christmas history about the fifteenth century. Usually children come around in the
evening to the front doors and start singing carols and the people living in these houses give
children candies, nuts, pies and so on, to thank them for carol singing.)
8. Who visits the children on Christmas Eve? (Santa Claus got his name from a man known
as St. Nickolas who lived in
Asia in the fourth century. He gave his wealth to the poor and often to children. After he died
the Dutch brought this legend to colonial America. Soon the Dutch name Sinter Kluas became
Santa Claus.)

нем.)
Veliky Ustyug is the homeland of Ded Moroz, a town in Vologda Oblast, Russia, located at the
confluence of the Sukhona and Yug Rivers. Population 32.048 (2008). Veliky Ustyug was founded in
1147 in the mouth of the Yug river. It served as a stronghold of the northern Russian borders.
In the middle of the 16th century Ustyug stopped being a frontline fortress and lost its military
significance. The trade significance of Ustyug increased so much that tsar Ivan the Terrible inscribed it in
the list of oprichnina towns and cities. At this period Ustyug got a status “Veliky” or “Great” for its
contribution to development of Russian trade.
In the 17th century rich merchants of Ustyug erected and decorated numerous churches and stone
buildings. Just the architecture became a “visiting card” of the town. There are many wonderful
architectural monuments on the banks of the Sukhona river: the Ascension church, built in 1648, the
Prokopiev cathedral, erected in 1668, the majestic Assumption cathedral of the 18th century. Downstream
the ensemble of the TroitseGledensky monastery is situated, its iconostasis is accepted in the world as a
masterpiece of icon painting.
Veliky Ustyug is famous for its landdiscoverers. In the 17th century Semyon Dezhnyov discovered a
strait between Asia and America. Far Eastern city Khabarovsk is named after the citizen of Veliky Ustyug
Erofey Khabarov, who made a map of the territory around the Amur river.
Today Veliky Ustyug is famous for the works of the worldwide known plant “Northern Niello”, the
factory “Traceries of Veliky Ustyug”, which preserved folk craft of the 18th century, the birchbark and
wood carving.
Not far from Veliky Ustyug “The Ethel of Ded Moroz” is situated. The fairy person replies children
letters from the whole Russia, receipts visitors, and on New Year he makes a trip about the country,
finishing it in Moscow.

(На основе текста упр. 68 стр. 72)
13. From November onwards, it is impossible to forget that Christmas is coming. Coloured lights
decorate many town centers and shops, along with shiny artificial snow painted on shop windows. In streets and shops, “Christmas trees” (real or plastic evergreen “conifer” trees) are also decorated with
lights and Christmas ornaments.
Let’s watch the film about London during Christmas days.
14. Many children write letters to Santa Claus. Let’s read one of them and write our letters to him.
Sally Smith
123 Maple Lane
Cleveland, OH 44124
December 24, 2012
Dear Santa Claus,
My name is Sally and I am 5 years old. I have been a very good girl this year. I help Mommy wash
the dishes every night, and I listen to Daddy when he tells me to clean my room. I am also nice to my
little brother, even though he can be really annoying sometimes.
Thank you for all the presents last year. They were all really nice, and I played with all of them a
lot. This year I would like a jump rope, a kitten, and a new bike. I really really want the bike.
Please give my love to Mrs. Claus, the elves, and all the reindeer, especially Rudolph. I will leave
some carrots for the reindeer next to your milk and cookies.
Love,
Sally
Now let’s write a letter to Santa Claus.
15. What books do the children read during Christmas days? They like to read books by Oscar
Wilde. Let’s watch the cartoon “The Happy Prince”
"Dear little Swallow," said the Prince, "you tell me of marvellous things, but more marvellous than
anything is the suffering of men and of women. There is no Mystery so great as Misery. Fly over my city,
little Swallow, and tell me what you see there."
So the Swallow flew over the great city, and saw the rich making merry in their beautiful houses, while
the beggars were sitting at the gates. He flew into dark lanes, and saw the white faces of starving children
looking out listlessly at the black streets. Under the archway of a bridge two little boys were lying in one
another's arms to try and keep themselves warm. "How hungry we are!" they said. "You must not lie
here," shouted the Watchman, and they wandered out into the rain.
Then he flew back and told the Prince what he had seen. "I am covered with fine gold," said the Prince,
"you must take it off, leaf by leaf, and give it to my poor; the living always think that gold can make them
happy."
Leaf after leaf of the fine gold the Swallow picked off, till the Happy Prince looked quite dull and grey.
Leaf after leaf of the fine gold he brought to the poor, and the children's faces grew rosier, and they
laughed and played games in the street. "We have bread now!" they cried.
16. Let’s read the extract of the book “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens.
It was Christmas Eve in London. The bells in the church were ringing all day long, the candles in the
shop windows were lit and you could see people walking quickly through the snowcovered streets. That
special feeling which people only seem to have at Christmas was everywhere. Everywhere, that is, except
in one place. There was one office, with the name Scrooge and Marley painted across the window. Two men
were in it, working, without smiles on their faces. There was a small fire in the fireplace. Ebenezer
Scrooge, the owner, did not like to spend money so the fire stayed small. Scrooge thought it was a waste
of money to put more coal on the fire. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, was sitting at his desk writing letters,
trying to keep his hands warm by the heat of his candle. Suddenly, the door opened and the cold and
wind from outside filled the room. A young man with red cheeks, curly dark hair and a friendly smile
stood in the doorway. «Merry Christmas, Uncle! Merry Christmas, Bob. Bob Cratchit looked up for a
moment.
«Merry Christmas to you, sir.»
Scrooge pointed his crooked finger at Bob Cratchit.
«Get back to work, and keep your ‘Merry Christmas’ to yourself! As for you, Fred, I have two
words for Christmas: Bah! Humbug!»
Fred, Scrooge’s nephew, came into the shop and closed the door. He never let the smile leave his
face.
«Uncle, why do you call Christmas ‘humbug’? It’s the one holiday when people open their hearts
and truly feel kind towards others. Even you can see that.»
Scrooge got up from his desk. He had small, round glasses sitting on the end of his nose. His face
was red with anger and he frowned as he spoke.
«I’ll tell you what I see. I see people spending more money than they have. I see work stopping
and money lost for a day that is just like any other day! If I could, I would cancel Christmas and make
everyone work twice as hard.»
«But the fact is, Uncle, only butchers and bakers work on Christmas Day. So my wife and I want
you to come and have Christmas dinner with us.»
Then the snow came, and after the snow came the frost. The streets looked as if they were made of silver,
they were so bright and glistening; long icicles like crystal daggers hung down from the eaves of the
houses, everybody went about in furs, and the little boys wore scarlet caps and skated on the ice.
And do you know the end of the story?
