                                                        The Economy.

Russia was the most populous state of the former USSR and also the wealthiest one. It produced 78% of all its natural gas, 60% of steel, 80% of timber (лесоматериал) and 91% of oil. It also has one of the world’s largest fishing industries.

Before the Revolution Russia was one of the world’s largest grain producers and exporters. But lately Russia become one of its biggest importers as a result of collectivization and mismanagement (плохое управление) of agriculture.

In Soviet times, the central planning system was inefficient (неэффективный) as regards both production and distribution of goods. By 1980s the quality gap (расхождение) between home (зд: отечественный) and western products could no longer be ignored and called for reforms. Entering the world market demands from Russian economists the creation of effective management in industry and agriculture.

Until its industry can be modernized, Russia will remain dependent on the energy sector. Before 1986 it was planned that an expanded nuclear (ядерный)  program could help the conservation of other energy resources. But after the Chernobyl disaster, these plans were sharply curtailed.

However, disposal (размещение) of nuclear waste and closing down of old power plants remain major problems not only for Russia but for other industrial countries as well.

                                                               The Urals.

The Ural Mountains are regarded as the border between Europe and Asia. To the  west of the Urals lies European Russia, the cradle of Russian culture. To the east, lies the vast land of Siberia.

The Ural Economic Region is one of the most industrialized in the Russian Federation.

The legendary mineral wealth of the Urals includes rich deposits of iron, copper, bauxite, titanium, chromite and platinum as well as nickel, zinc, silver, gold, cobalt, malachite, marble and many kinds of gems.

Large areas of the northern and central Urals are still virgin forests, mountain streams and waterfalls. In the central part of the Urals, most of the industry and the biggest towns such as Yekaterinburg are concentrated.

There the mountains are generally lower and offer a gateway (зд: ворота) from European Russia into the Siberia. The great highway (главный путь) into the Urals from south and west is the River Kama.

The Russians first began advancing across the Urals in the late 16th century. The Siberia’s attraction is its great wealth of fur (мех) in its gold, diamond, silver, iron, copper and timber resources. These eventually led to the growth of local industries and towns and also to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway between 1891 and 1905.
