The comparative degree of adjectives
1. Some adjectives have irregular comparative forms:
good – better
bad – worse
far – further (farther)
Further (but not farther) can also mean more or additional.
Example: Let me know immediately if you hear any further news (= any more news).
2. Older and elder.
The comparative of old is older.
Example: Tom looks older than he really is.
We use elder when we are talking about members of a family.
Example: My elder brother is a pilot.
We use elder only before a noun.
Example: My brother is older than me. (Not “elder than me”.)
3. Sometimes we use two comparatives together. We use this structure to say that
something is changing continuously.
For example: harder and harder, more and more, more and more difficult.
Example:
It’s becoming harder and harder to find a job.
Your English is improving. It’s getting better and better.
4. Note the structure (the + comparative+ the better).
Example:
What time shall we leave? “The sooner the better”.
What size box do you want? “The bigger the better”.
5. We also use the – the (with two comparatives) to say that one thing depends on
another thing.
Example:
The warmer the weather, the better I feel.
The earlier we leave, the sooner we will arrive.
Complete these sentences using these words: better, worse, further, older, elder. You
have to use some of these words more than once. Besides, you should use than, where
necessary.
