CHICKENPOX DISEASE
Chickenpox (chicken pox), also known as varicella, is a highly contagious infection caused by the varicella zoster virus.
Although uncomfortable, most people recover within 1-2 weeks.
THE SYMPTOMS
The illness begins with fever
Slight headache and listlessness
Within a day or 2 spots appear on the chest or back (which soon look like small blisters)
Such new “crops” keep appearing for 2-3 days and ones get scrubbed over
TREATMENT
Chickenpox is usually a mild disease and there is no particular treatment, except to keep the skin clean and use some soothing lotion for itching
The itching can also be relieved by bathing the child with a small quantity of soda 2-3 times a day
Antihistamine syrup to relieve itching should only be given under medical advise
PREVENTION
A vaccine is available for varicella. For children, 2 doses of the varicella vaccine are given, one at 12 to 15 months and one at age 4 to 6 years.
These are effective at preventing chickenpox.
