Longfellow by Henry Wadsworth (1807­82),  an American writer. Romantic poet.  Collections "by the sea and the hearth"  (1849), "migratory birds" (1858); poem  "Evangelina" (1847), "the Song of  Hiawatha" (1855; based on Indian  legends), "Matchmaking miles Standish"  (1858).

•The song of Hiawatha, "Longfellow says," is an Indian Edda, if I may call it that.  I wrote it based on the legends that prevail among the North American Indians.  They say about the person of miraculous origin, who had been sent to them to  clear their rivers, forests, fishing places and to teach the peoples of the peaceful  arts.  Hiawatha that means ­ the prophet, the teacher. Into this old tradition I  have woven other interesting Indian legends... The action of the poem takes  place in the country of ajibaev on the South shore of Lake superior, between  Scenic Cliffs and the Great Sand".

A young American Indian Hiawatha, raised in the Ojibwe tribe, learned the  language of birds and animals as a child. Magic gloves give him  supernatural power, magic moccasins allow you to do with every step of the  mile. They help him to take vengeance on the father, Mudjekeewis, the  personification of the West Wind, for the evil that he caused his mother,  Winona. Becoming the leader of the tribe, Hiawatha protects him for many  years of cloudless peace. Him marrying maiden Minnehaha celebrated with  feasts and songs, but in the end, death, famine, and white men are  destroying the Indians. Die friends of Hiawatha, Minnehaha dies, and  Hiawatha himself, giving his people the Council to adopt the new religion of  the white priests, sailed to the Islands of the Blessed.
