Talkies
The era of the talking films began in 1927 with the enormous success of Warner Brothers.
The first 100% sound film, Lights of New York, appeared in 1928 the first colour film was made
in the 1930s.
It is the time when new kinds of film appeared: the musical and gangster film.

NFT – National Film Theatre 63 years. It shows all kinds of films from silent classics to film
festival hits. Many big name filmmakers have visited, from Woody Allen to Quentin
Tarantino to Jaques Tati (who couldn’t find the toilet and was photographed using the wall
outside.)

Director – control all the actors and technicians on a film set.
Producer – look after the business side of the film.
Editor – “cut” all the film shot into a final 23 hour version.
Screenplay by – scriptwriter.
Casting director – choose actors.
Art director – do the sets and costumes.
Second unit director – person who can be in another city.
Gaffer – the electrician in charge of lighting on the set.
Best boy – assistant to the gaffer.
Key grip – moves the camera.
FocusPuller – keep the camera in focus.
Clapperloader – operates the clapperboard.
Dubbing editor – mix dialog, music and sound effects.
Sound mixer – control the equipment which sounds picked up by the microphone.
Continuity supervisor – control that costumes, sets, props, etc. are all consistent.
Boom operator – hold the microphone above the actor’s head to record what they are saying.
